johnbuckman commented on Employees Suck "Any thoughts on how you choose ’smart’ contractors to help you?’" Yes, do what Mark Shuttleworth of Ubuntu did: find people in the open source world that are already doing work like what you need, read their postings in discussion forums (to evaluate their tech savvy and their sociability) and then email them to try to recruit them. Allow some/all of their work to go open source, so it fits with the philosophy, let them work at home, and give them plenty of respect. Ignore country bariers: just hire the best people you can find, wherever they are in the world. Example: I hired one of the key programmers of Amarok (the iTunes-clone-for-linux) to work on Magnatune, and give him a big chunk of time to also work on Amarok on the side. - John Buckman 2 years ago
