Apollo Foundation Presentation Transcript

  • 1. A hypothetical business plan for a future non-profit The Apollo Foundation Laying the groundwork for a spacefaring civilization
  • 2. A hypothetical business plan for a future non-profit Spacefaring (adj.) - to be capable of and active in the art of space travel or space transport - to travel the planets and stars as seafaring nations travel the oceans
  • 3. A hypothetical business plan for a future non-profit Terrestrial Civilization Specefaring Civilization Building a spacefaring civilization is important Knowledge Survivability Resources Our understanding of life, physics, and meaning is limited by the geographic scope of our civilization. The more worlds humans occupy, the less likely we are to be extinguished by catastrophic events. Places beyond our planet can provide materials to improve productivity, health, and happiness.
  • 4. A hypothetical business plan for a future non-profit Our mission is to… in projects that tackle threats to a spacefaring human civilization.Invest a global discussion around about mitigating species-level threats and striking out for the stars.Ignite Integrate efforts from around the world to promote a shared goal of a spacefaring civilization.
  • 5. A hypothetical business plan for a future non-profit Terrestrial Civilization Specefaring Civilization The path to a spacefaring civilization faces a spectrum of threats, grouped into five categories: Pandemic Climate Disruption Extinction Isolation Ignorance
  • 6. A hypothetical business plan for a future non-profit Apollo’s five Task Forces strategically inject funding into projects that cripple, mitigate, and contain these threats. Terrestrial Civilization Specefaring Civilization Pandemic Climate Disruption Extinction Isolation Ignorance Health Resilience Clean Energy Planetary Defense Global Workspace Disruptive Technology
  • 7. A hypothetical business plan for a future non-profit Task Forces Health Resilience: A global pandemic of sufficient intensity and scope could kill billions, potentially leading to a technological Dark Age not unlike the Middle Ages in Europe. Our Health Resilience task force works to prevent potential pandemics and to make populations, health systems, and human networks resistant if they should occur. Clean Energy: Climate destabilization resulting from emissions of greenhouse gases could cause incalculable economic, ecological, and human damage if emissions are not mitigated. Our Clean Energy task force is focused on developing and deploying innovative low- emissions energy technologies—at scale and across the globe. Planetary Defense: This isn’t science fiction. A single asteroid or other near-Earth object of sufficient size could decimate or destroy human civilization if its strikes the planet. Our Planetary Defense task force promotes the creation of technologies to detect, deflect, and destroy threatening near-Earth objects. Global Workspace: Perhaps the single greatest threat to spacefaring civilization is a lack of collaboration across the nations, cultures, religions, and socioeconomic strata of Earth. Our Global Workspace task force works to create technologies, platforms, and dialogues that promote widespread collaboration around humanity’s most pressing challenges. Disruptive Technology: Any spacefaring civilization must first develop the knowledge, technologies, and equipment that will carry it to the stars. Our Disruptive Technology task force emphasizes groundbreaking innovation over incremental progress, working with technological visionaries to accelerate deployment of new solutions.
  • 8. A hypothetical business plan for a future non-profit How the Apollo Foundation works Apollo Institute Apollo Fund Apollo Platform Finances projects identified by Institute. Solicits applications from around the world. Measures, tracks, and reports project outcomes via the Platform. Houses research, reports, real-time project updates and outcomes, and other resources. Provides an interactive online environment for people to share, discuss, and collaborate at no cost. Brings together global experts to address the five key threats. Puts together research and conferences for Platform distribution. Identifies and supports financing priorities. Task Forces
  • 9. A hypothetical business plan for a future non-profit We prefer projects that… Attack several of the five key spacefaring threats. Collaborate across disciplines, regions, and cultures. Promote global conversation about species-level challenges. Are scalable, replicable, and transparent.
  • 10. A hypothetical business plan for a future non-profit Health Resilience Clean Energy Planetary Defense Global Workspace Disruptive Technology Examples of ideal Apollo projects A global crowdsourcing platform that brings together researchers from around the world to brainstorm, design, and vet asteroid deflection technologies.
  • 11. A hypothetical business plan for a future non-profit Health Resilience Clean Energy Planetary Defense Global Workspace Disruptive Technology Examples of ideal Apollo projects A renewable energy program in Africa that installs clean energy capacity on hospitals in disease-prone areas with poor grid reliability to reduce pollution, improve hospital resiliency, and educate local communities.
  • 12. A hypothetical business plan for a future non-profit Health Resilience Clean Energy Planetary Defense Global Workspace Disruptive Technology Examples of ideal Apollo projects An international research institute that engages a diverse team of experts to develop new conceptual technologies for detecting, monitoring, and mining near-Earth objects.
  • 13. A hypothetical business plan for a future non-profit Health Resilience Clean Energy Planetary Defense Global Workspace Disruptive Technology Examples of ideal Apollo projects An algorithm that scans Facebook and Twitter for reports of disease symptoms, allowing epidemiologists to identify and track potential pandemic outbreaks.
