1
background
world refugee day is a celebration and a time to honor
the world's nearly 10 million refugees. At the Twin
Cities event, you will find dancers, singers, bands,
drummers, artisans, storytellers, speakers, and much
more.
2
audience
PRIMARY: refugees
SECONDARY: people who work with refugees, and
people who live in refugee infused
communites
3
membership insights
the site will not be used to gain funds, but it will be
important to prominently recognize the organizations
funding the event somewhere on the site. the main
goal to be accomplished is in regards to increasing
usability. the organization is also in dire need of a
content management system that an amatuer
programmer can use.
4
communication objectives
PRIMARY: continue to communicate with the client via
weekly e mailed status updates and the
team developed extranet site.
SECONDARY: various phone call and e mails will be sent
when immediate communication is
necessary.
5
key differentiators
there aren’t any real competitors for the minnesota
world refugee planning committee, but the site should
contain a few vital elements. specifically a design
aethetic that will create a diverse cultural and
celebratory feel.

mandatory elements
the site must prominently display where and when the
event will be taking place, along with a description of
exactly what the event will consist of. the site must
also feature a photo gallery of some sort that will be
used to display all of the event photos from this year
and previous years.

user profile
meet: asad elabdi
residence: minneapolis, MN
educational profile: student attending
public high school in minneapolis
goals: to complete his junior year of high school
at Minneapolis south, and find a decent paying part
time job near his home.
story: Asad Elabdi and his family came to the
United States in 1997 as refugees from their native
Somalia. He currently resides in the Cedar Riverside
apartment complex near the west bank of the U of M
campus. Asad enjoys learning about American culture,
and has been heavily influenced by American music
and sports. Over the years Asad has worked to
perfect his English and has admittedly become
“more American”, but he recognizes the importance
of his past and the traditional cultural ideas that his
parents cling to.
he asks: How do I feel about current status as a
Somalian refugee? Is there any place where
I can be recognized and celebrate my heritage with
other refugees from my community or communities like mine?
