1. 3. What kind of media institution might
distribute your media product and why?
We chose Monarch as our selected company to distribute our
film as they are an Independent company that typically distribute
horror/thriller films. It has distributed The Maze which is a
thriller/horror film and Vampire diaries which is a psychological
horror, both within the past ten years. This is why it is suitable for
our film as it distributes our genre and is an Independent
company meaning it is used to dealing with low budget/low
resourced films.
2. A local Independent company
If my film was distributed by a company such as Warp Films, then it
would have to be marketed to a specific audience to get maximum
profit. Possibly adverts in the newspaper and links to websites relating
to the film on social media would be the most appropriate forms of
marketing as these are a cheap way of letting people know about the
film. You can also get the audience involved with your film by having
interactive features on your website. Due to the small budget the ability
to attract a wide audience, would be difficult, it would only be released
in selected cinemas around the U.K, then if it gets a good amount of
box-office sales then you can increase the amount of screens it is shown
in, if it has been successful and well received.
4. Advantages of a Independent film
Because we designed the storyline of our film
independently we could alter and modify the storyline of
“Compulsion” with no objections. Leading on from that,
we had creativity control. We choose whatever we
wanted to film and we did it whenever we wanted to.
Also because we did not have a filming or editing crew we
took on these roles ourselves so we got experiences filing
and using the cameras and then we edited the film our
selves so we got experience using applications such as
‘Final Cut’.
5. Disadvantages of an Independent film
• Because we don’t have separate crews for editing and filming
and casting, etc we had to do all the work ourselves.
• Because you only have a small budget you have to budget for
everything and you can’t afford to use high quality equipment
and software
• Due to the small budget it is impossible to attract popular big
name actors/actresses, so the unpopular ones are the only
option, this affects the overall popularity of the film.
• Another disadvantage is the film can only be marketed locally
not internationally.
• This means only local people will hear about the film and only
a small amount of people will watch the film which means
less profit.
6. A mainstream company
These films have bigger budgets to produce
better quality films, with big name actors
starring. These have a bigger audience as they
market through things like billboards and they
have premiers for the films, because they know
people will come.
7. Possible Mainstream Distribution
companies
FILM TITLE: DISTRIBUTION COMPANY:
Taken (2008)
Point Break (1991)
Enemy of the state (1998)
These thriller films follow a similar plot to mine, but were a produce and
distributed on a bigger budget, so it is unlikely to be distributed by these type
of companies, as they would only distribute high quality films.
