  • 1. Exploring the Modern and Foreign in Languages 26 th March - Language World 2010 www.joedale.typepad.com [email_address]
  • 2. The Rose Review (2009) ‘ “ it will become increasingly important to command ICT skills to prepare for technologies of the future. The foundations for this engagement are best formed in primary schools, where children’s enthusiasm for ICT is evident. Moreover, we must avoid raising a population divided between ICT ‘haves’ and ‘have nots’, because this would pose a considerable threat to both economic wellbeing and social cohesion.”
  • 3. The Importance of ICT (2009) “ In the schools visited, students almost always enjoyed working with ICT and were well engaged by tasks that enabled them to do so. Using ICT contributed effectively to their personal development. In sharing ideas, it helped to develop the skills of working independently and cooperatively. ICT was particularly successful in motivating disaffected boys and improving their attitudes to learning, for example through giving them opportunities to record podcasts in modern foreign languages.”
  • 4. Evaluation schedule of judgements for schools The quality of teaching and the use of assessment to support learning Inspectors should take into account the extent to which : appropriate use of new technology maximises learning (September 2009)
  • 5. The safe use of new technologies Blocking pupils' access to unsuitable websites does not encourage them to take responsibility for their safety online (February 2010)
  • 6.   Impact of ICT and New Media on Language Learning “ Social networking shunned as aid to language teaching” Major EU study reports Europe-wide failure among specialists to capitalise on student enthusiasm for new technologies. Language teachers are failing to take advantage of social networking and even see the phenomenon as a threat to their classroom authority, according to a major international report. (TES March 2010)
  • 7. Northgate 'outstanding' in ICT & MFL “ The school has pioneered a number of innovative ways to improve language learning. These include the use of podcasts, a language college blog and a wiki system. The blog contains many ideas and resources on language teaching and receives about 150 hits per week, approximately half of which are from students and half of which are from other schools, including some from abroad. The wiki system enables students to store their work online and staff to check and mark it. It also enables students to communicate rapidly with staff about language learning. The college has also begun to use a social networking service to remind students about coursework deadlines.”
