    • Do Now
What are the similarities and differences between meiosis and mitosis?
      Hmmm…
    • Mitosis Similarities Meiosis
    • Mitosis
    • Meiosis
      Preexisting Cell(2N)
Cell Duplicates its DNA here, too (4N)
      Cell divides (2N)
      Cells divides again (N)
Know that meiosis divides twice! So 4N2NN
Know that meiosis occurs in sex cells (sperm and eggs)
UP TO THIS POINT, IT IS THE SAME AS MITOSIS!!!
    • AIM: How do cancer cells differ from other cells?
    • Cancer
Disorder which body cells lose the ability to control growth
Cancer cells do not respond to signals that regulate growth
As a result, cancer cells divide uncontrollably
    • Cancer cells continue to divide and form tumors
Tumor – a mass of cells
Malignant tumor – invade and destroy surrounding tissues
Benign tumor – do not spread to healthy tissue
    • Malignant Tumor
    • What causes cancer?
      Defects in DNA, genes
Exposure to radiation, tobacco, or viruses
All types of cancer have one thing in common: control over the cell cycle control is broken.
