14.05.25 exegesis easter 6

  1. 1. John 6:54 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.
  2. 2. 1 Dear Christians, one and all, rejoice, With exultation springing, And with united heart and voice And holy rapture singing, Proclaim the wonders God has done, How His right arm the vict'ry won; What price our ransom cost Him! 2 Fast bound in Satan's chains I lay; Death brooded darkly o'er me. Sin was my torment night and day; In sin my mother bore me. But daily deeper still I fell; My life became a living hell, So firmly sin possessed me. 3 My own good works all came to naught, No grace or merit gaining; Free will against God's jugment fought, Dead to all good remaining. My fears increased till sheer despair Left only death to be my share; The pangs of hell I suffered. 4 But God had seen my wretched state Before the world's foundation, And mindful of His mercies great, He planned for my salvation. He turned to me a father's heart; He did not choose the easy part But gave His dearest treasure. 5 God said to His beloved Son: "It's time to have compassion. Then go, bright jewel of My crown, And bring to all salvation. From sin and sorrow set them free; Slay bitter death for them that they May live with You forever."
  3. 3. 6 The Son obeyed His Father's will, Was born of virgin mother; And God's good pleasure to fulfill, He came to be my brother. His royal pow'r disguised He bore; A servant's form, like mine, He wore To lead the devil captive. 7 To me He said: "Stay close to Me, I am your rock and castle. Your ransom I Myself will be; For you I strive and wrestle. For I am yours, and you are Mine, And where I am you may remain; The foe shall not divide us. 8 "Though he will shed My precious blood, Me of My life bereaving, All this I suffer for your good; Be steadfast and believing. Life will from death the vict'ry win; My innocence shall bear your sin, And you are blest forever. 9 "Now to My Father I depart, From earth to heav'n ascending, And, heav'nly wisdom to impart, The Holy Spirit sending; In trouble He will comfort you And teach you always to be true And into truth shall guide you. 10 "What I on earth have done and taught, Guide all your life and teaching; So shall the kingdom's work be wrought And honored in your preaching. But watch lest foes with base alloy The heav'nly treausre should destroy; This final word I leave you."
  4. 4. For sure and certain faith to love the Lord and to keep His commandments, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy. For those who suffer for righteousness’ sake, that they would be delivered from fear of their enemies and honor Christ as Lord in their hearts… For boldness to make a faithful witness to Christ, as St. Paul once did in the Areopagus, and to faithfully proclaim one divine truth in the midst of this world’s many false gods… Remembering those who have given all for our country and laid the ultimate sacrifice on the altar of freedom; for those who have borne the burdens of deployment; for those who have faithfully served God and country; for those who now wear the cloth of our country and serve with honor, courage and commitment, that we might give thanks for their faithful service this Memorial Day… For the lonely, the destitute and the homeless, that they would trust in the Lord for their daily bread, and that the Lord would make us messengers of His mercy as we reach out to all around us in need…
  5. 5. For our inner cities and those who face the challenges of urban living, that the Lord would reach down to them in grace and grant them peace, safety and security… For those who travel this holiday weekend, that they would be granted safe passage on the land, in the air and by sea… For those who have requested our intercession, [especially ________________,] that the Lord would grant healing according to His will and hope according to His promise… For the right reception of the Lord’s Supper at this altar today, that those who eat and drink the Savior’s body and blood may remember Jesus’ sacrifice, proclaim His death and receive in faith the pledge of future glory… For all who departed this life in saving faith, let us give thanks and praise, asking that we might be given our portion with them in the Kingdom… Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
  6. 6. The Lord Jesus Comforts Us with the Preaching of His Resurrection
  7. 7. 1 Up through endless ranks of angels, cries of triumph in his ears, to his heavenly throne ascending, having vanquished all their fears, Christ looks down upon his faithful, leaving them in happy tears. 2 Death-destroying, life-restoring, proven equal to our need, now for us before the Father as our brother intercede; flesh that for our world was wounded, living, for the wounded plead! 3 To our lives of wanton wandering send your promised Spirit guide; through our lives of fear and failure with your power and love abide; welcome us, as you were welcomed, to an endless Eastertide. 4 Alleluia! Alleluia! O to breathe the Spirit's grace! Alleluia! Alleluia! O to see the Father's face. Alleluia! Alleluia! O to feel the Son's embrace!
