  • 1. The Purification of Mary and the Presentation of Our Lord God Gives the Gift of a Child to Destroy Death 1 Sam. 1:21–28; Heb. 2:14–18; Luke 2:22–40; Psalm 84
  • 2. THE PURIFICATION OF MARY AND THE PRESENTATION OF OUR LORD 1 Samuel 1:21–28 Hebrews 2:14–18 Luke 2:22–32 (33–40) God Gives the Gift of a Child to Destroy Death The Lord opened the barren womb of Hannah and gave her the gift of the son for whom she prayed, and in grateful response she presented and gave the child, Samuel, to the Lord‘s service. “As long as he lives, he is lent to the LORD” (1 Sam. 2:28). So, too, did Mary and Joseph present the Child promised from the fall, born of a virgin‘s womb. The true offering wasn‘t the turtledoves or young pigeons. It was the Child they carried. This Child has come to “destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery” (Heb. 2:14b–15). Set free by His advent in our flesh and the promise of what He would do “in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people” (Heb. 2:17b), Simeon and Anna rejoiced, and we with them, for we know that we, too, can face death unafraid and “depart in peace” (Luke 2:29) when our time comes.
  • 3. • We have historically celebrated Christ‘s presentation in the temple with a Candlemas and Feast. • Simeon then prophesied to Mary: "Behold, this child is set for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and for a sign which is spoken against. Yes, a sword will pierce through your own soul, that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed" (Luke 2:3435). • What are God‘s biggest surprises?

Why have we humbled ourselves, and you take no knowledge of it?‘ Behold, in the day of your fast you seek your own pleasure,[a] and oppress all your workers. 4 Behold, you fast only to quarrel and to fight and to hit with a wicked fist. Fasting like yours this day will not make your voice to be heard on high. 5 Is such the fast that I choose, a day for a person to humble himself? Is it to bow down his head like a reed, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? Will you call this a fast, and a day acceptable to theLORD? 6 ―Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the straps of the yoke, to let the oppressed[b] go free, and to break every yoke? 7 Is it not to share your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover him, and not to hide yourself from your own flesh? 8 Then shall your light break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up speedily; your righteousness shall go before you; the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard. 9 Then you shall call, and the LORDwill answer; you shall cry, and he will say, ‗Here I am.‘ If you take away the yoke from your midst, the pointing of the finger, and speaking wickedness, Psalm 112:1-9 The Righteous Will Never Be Moved 112 [a] Praise the LORD! Blessed is the man who fears theLORD, who greatly delights in his commandments! 2 the generation of the upright will be blessed. and riches are in his house, and his righteousness endures forever. 4 Light dawns in the darkness for the upright; he is gracious, merciful, andrighteous. 5 It is well with the man who deals generously and lends; who conducts his affairs with justice. 6 For the righteous will never be moved; he will be remembered forever. 7 He is not afraid of bad news; his heart is firm, trusting in theLORD. 8 His heart is steady; he will not be afraid, until he looks in triumph on his adversaries. 9 He has distributed freely; he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever; his horn is exalted in honor. 3 Wealth 1 Corinthians 2:1-16 Proclaiming Christ Crucified spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God. 13 And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual.[d] 14 The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. 15 The spiritual person judges all things, but is himself to be judged by no one. 16 ―For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?‖ But we have the mind of Christ.
