  7. 7. Numbers 21:4-9The Bronze Serpent4 From Mount Hor they set out by theway to the Red Sea, to go around theland of Edom. And the people becameimpatient on the way. 5 And the peoplespoke against God and against Moses,"Why have you brought us up out ofEgypt to die in the wilderness? For thereis no food and no water, and we loathethis worthless food.‖ 6 Then the LORDsent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that manypeople of Israel died. 7 And the peoplecame to Moses and said, ―We havesinned, for we have spoken against theLORD and against you. Pray to theLORD, that he take away the serpentsfrom us.‖ So Moses prayed for thepeople. 8 And the LORD said to Moses,―Make a fiery serpent and set it on apole, and everyone who is bitten, whenhe sees it, shall live.‖ 9 So Moses madea bronze serpent and set it on a pole. And if a serpent bit anyone, he wouldlook at the bronze serpent and live.
  8. 8. 1 Timothy 2:1-6Pray for All People2 First of all, then, I urge thatsupplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for allpeople, 2 for kings and all who are inhigh positions, that we may lead apeaceful and quiet life, godly anddignified in every way. 3 This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God ourSavior, 4 who desires all people to besaved and to come to the knowledge ofthe truth. 5 For there is one God, andthere is one mediator between God andmen, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gavehimself as a ransom for all, which is thetestimony given at the proper time.
  9. 9. James 1:22-2722 But be doers of the word, and nothearers only, deceiving yourselves.23For if anyone is a hearer of the wordand not a doer, he is like a man wholooks intently at his natural face in amirror. 24 For he looks at himself andgoes away and at once forgets what hewas like. 25 But the one who looks intothe perfect law, the law of liberty, andperseveres, being no hearer who forgetsbut a doer who acts, he will be blessedin his doing.26 If anyone thinks he is religious anddoes not bridle his tongue but deceiveshis heart, this persons religion isworthless. 27 Religion that is pure andundefiled before God, the Father, isthis: to visit orphans and widows intheir affliction, and to keep oneselfunstained from the world.
  10. 10. John 16:23-3323 In that day you will ask nothing ofme. Truly, truly, I say to you, whateveryou ask of the Father in my name, hewill give it to you. 24 Until now youhave asked nothing in my name. Ask,and you will receive, that your joy maybe full.I Have Overcome the World25 ―I have said these things to you infigures of speech. The hour is comingwhen I will no longer speak to you infigures of speech but will tell youplainly about the Father. 26 In that dayyou will ask in my name, and I do notsay to you that I will ask the Father onyour behalf; 27 for the Father himselfloves you, because you have loved meand have believed that I came fromGod. 28 I came from the Father andhave come into the world, and now Iam leaving the world and going to theFather.‖29 His disciples said, ―Ah, now you arespeaking plainly and not usingfigurative speech! 30 Now we knowthat you know all things and do notneed anyone to question you; this iswhy we believe that you came fromGod.‖31 Jesus answered them, ―Doyou now believe? 32 Behold, the houris coming, indeed it has come, whenyou will be scattered, each to his ownhome, and will leave me alone. Yet Iam not alone, for the Father is with me.33 I have said these things to you, thatin me you may have peace. In theworld you will have tribulation. Buttake heart; I have overcome the world.‖
  11. 11. Psalm 107:1-9Book FiveLet the Redeemed of the LORD SaySo107 Oh give thanks to the LORD, forhe is good, for his steadfast love enduresforever!2 Let the redeemed of the LORD sayso, whom he has redeemed from trouble3 and gathered in from the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south.4 Some wandered in desert wastes, finding no way to a city to dwell in;5 hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted within them.6 Then they cried to the LORD in theirtrouble, and he delivered them from theirdistress.7 He led them by a straight waytill they reached a city to dwell in.8 Let them thank the LORD for hissteadfast love, for his wondrous works to thechildren of man!9 For he satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul he fills withgood things.
  12. 12. SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER (Rogate)Numbers 21:4–91 Timothy 2:1–6or James 1:22–27John 16:23–30 (31–33)The Father Answers Our Prayers Because of Jesus―Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it toyou‖ (John 16:23). To pray in Jesus’ name is to pray as one who has been baptized. For itis in the water that He put His name upon you, claiming you as His own, making you a sonof God with access to the Father. By His incarnation and crucifixion, our Lord Jesus brokethrough the barrier of sin which separated us from God, opening a portal to the Father. Topray in Jesus’ name is to pray with faith in Him as the one Mediator between God andmen, who gave Himself a ransom for all (1 Tim. 2:1–6). Like Moses in the wilderness,Jesus is our go-between and intercessor before the throne of heaven. He was lifted up forus on the cross that we might be saved and restored to fellowship with the Father (Num.21:4–9). Looking into this perfect teaching of liberty (James 1:22–27) we pray withboldness and confidence as dear children of God.
  13. 13. Our Father who art in heaven, hallowedbe thy name.Thy kingdom come.Thy will be done on earth as it is inheaven.Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses,as we forgive our debtors, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
  14. 14. Jesus Is Ascended, but NotAbsent2 Kings 2:5-155 The sons of the prophets whowere at Jericho drew near toElisha and said to him, ―Do youknow that today the LORD willtake away your master from overyou?‖ And he answered, ―Yes, Iknow it; keep quiet.‖6 Then Elijah said to him, ―Pleasestay here, for the LORD has sentme to the Jordan.‖ But he said,―As the LORD LIVES, and as youyourself live, I will not leaveyou.‖ So the two of them wenton. 7 Fifty men of the sons of theprophets also went and stood atsome distance from them, as theyboth were standing by theJordan. 8 Then Elijah took hiscloak and rolled it up and struckthe water, and the water wasparted to the one side and to theother, till the two of them couldgo over on dry ground.9 When they had crossed, Elijahsaid to Elisha, ―Ask what I shalldo for you, before I am takenfrom you.‖ And Elisha said,―Please let there be a doubleportion of your spirit onme.‖ 10 And he said, ―You haveasked a hard thing; yet, if you seeme as I am being taken from you,it shall be so for you, but if youdo not see me, it shall not beso.‖ 11 And as they still went onand talked, behold, chariots offire and horses of fire separatedthe two of them. And Elijah wentup by a whirlwind intoheaven.12 And Elisha saw it andhe cried, ―My father, myfather! The chariots of Israel andits horsemen!‖ And he saw himno more. Then he took hold of his ownclothes and tore them in twopieces. 13 And he took up thecloak of Elijah that had fallenfrom him and went back andstood on the bank of theJordan. 14 Then he took the cloakof Elijah that had fallen from himand struck the water, saying,―Where is the LORD, the God ofElijah?‖ And when he had struckthe water, the water was parted tothe one side and to the other, andElisha went over.Elisha Succeeds Elijah15 Now when the sons of theprophets who were at Jericho sawhim opposite them, they said,―The spirit of Elijah rests onElisha.‖ And they came to meethim and bowed to the groundbefore him.
  15. 15. Acts 1:1-11The Promise of the HolySpirit1 In the first book,O Theophilus, I have dealt withall that Jesus began to do andteach, 2 until the day when hewas taken up, after he hadgiven commands through theHoly Spirit to the apostleswhom he had chosen. 3 Hepresented himself alive to themafter his suffering by manyproofs, appearing to themduring forty days and speakingabout the kingdom of God.4 And while staying withthem he ordered them not todepart from Jerusalem, but towait for the promise of theFather, which, he said, ―youheard from me; 5 for Johnbaptized with water, but youwill be baptized with the HolySpirit not many days fromnow.‖The Ascension6 So when they had cometogether, they asked him,―Lord, will you at thistime restore the kingdom toIsrael?‖ 7 He said to them, ―It isnot for you to know times orseasons that the Father hasfixed by his ownauthority. 8 But you willreceive power when the HolySpirit has come upon you,and you will be my witnessesin Jerusalem and in all Judeaand Samaria, and to the end ofthe earth.‖ 9 And when he hadsaid these things, as they werelooking on, he was lifted up,and a cloud took him out oftheir sight. 10 And while theywere gazing into heaven as hewent, behold, two men stoodby them in white robes, 11 andsaid, ―Men of Galilee, why doyou stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken upfrom you intoheaven, will come in the sameway as you saw him go intoheaven.‖
  16. 16. Mark 16:14-20The Great Commission14 Afterward he appeared to theeleven themselves as they werereclining at table, and he rebukedthem for their unbeliefand hardness of heart, because they had not believedthose who saw him after he hadrisen.15 And he said to them, ―Gointo all the world and proclaimthe gospel to the wholecreation. 16 Whoever believes andis baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe willbe condemned. 17 And these signswill accompany those whobelieve: in my name they willcast out demons; they will speakin new tongues; 18 they will pickup serpents with their hands; andif they drink any deadly poison, itwill not hurt them; they will laytheir hands on the sick, and theywill recover.‖19 So then the Lord Jesus, after hehad spoken to them, was taken upinto heaven and sat down at theright hand of God. 20 And theywent out and preachedeverywhere, while the Lordworked with them andconfirmed the message byaccompanying signs.]]Luke 24:44-5344 Then he said to them, ―Theseare my words that I spoke to youwhile I was still with you, thateverything written about me inthe Law of Moses and theProphets and the Psalms must befulfilled.‖ 45 Then he opened theirminds to understand theScriptures, 46 and said tothem, ―Thus it is written, that theChrist should suffer and on thethird day rise from thedead, 47 and that repentanceand forgiveness of sins should beproclaimed in his name to allnations, beginning fromJerusalem.48 You are witnesses ofthese things. 49 And behold, I amsending the promise of my Fatherupon you. But stay in the cityuntil you are clothedwith power from on high.‖The Ascension50 Then he led them out as faras Bethany, and lifting up hishands he blessed them. 51 Whilehe blessed them, he parted fromthem and was carried up intoheaven. 52 And they worshipedhim and returned toJerusalem with greatjoy, 53 and were continually in thetemple blessing God.
  17. 17. Mark 16:14-20The Great Commission14 Afterward he appeared to the eleventhemselves as they were reclining at table, andhe rebuked them for their unbelief and hardnessof heart, because they had not believed thosewho saw him after he had risen.15 And he saidto them, ―Go into all the world and proclaimthe gospel to the whole creation. 16 Whoeverbelieves and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will becondemned. 17 And these signs will accompanythose who believe: in my name they will castout demons; they will speak in newtongues; 18 they will pick up serpents with theirhands; and if they drink any deadly poison, itwill not hurt them; they will lay their hands onthe sick, and they will recover.‖19 So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spokento them, was taken up into heaven and satdown at the right hand of God. 20 And theywent out and preached everywhere, while theLord worked with them and confirmed themessage by accompanying signs.]]Luke 24:44-5344 Then he said to them, ―These are my wordsthat I spoke to you while I was still withyou, that everything written about me in theLaw of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalmsmust be fulfilled.‖ 45 Then he opened theirminds to understand the Scriptures, 46 and saidto them, ―Thus it is written, that the Christshould suffer and on the third day rise from thedead, 47 and that repentance and forgiveness ofsins should be proclaimed in his name to allnations, beginning from Jerusalem.48 You arewitnesses of these things. 49 And behold, I amsending the promise of my Father upon you.But stay in the city until you are clothedwith power from on high.‖The Ascension50 Then he led them out as far as Bethany, andlifting up his hands he blessed them. 51 Whilehe blessed them, he parted from them and wascarried up into heaven. 52 And they worshipedhim and returned to Jerusalem with greatjoy, 53 and were continually in thetemple blessing God.Psalm 110Sit at My Right HandA Psalm of David.110 The LORD says to my Lord:―Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.‖2 The LORD sends forth from Zionyour mighty scepter.Rule in the midst of your enemies!3 Your people will offer themselves freelyon the day of your power,in holy garments;from the womb of the morning, the dew of your youth will be yours.4 The LORD has swornand will not change his mind,―You are a priest foreverafter the order of Melchizedek.‖5 The Lord is at your right hand;he will shatter kings on the day of his wrath.6 He will execute judgment among the nations, filling them with corpses;he will shatter chiefsover the wide earth.7 He will drink from the brook by the way;therefore he will lift up his head.
