Local Nonprofit Environment
The trend-setting pilot program is targeted for intact families in the Englewood community (parent(s) or custodial adults) with children enrolled in CPS, including charter schools from pre-Kindergarten through High School. Icarus-E is uniquely situated in the heart of the targeted community and has a long and rich ongoing relationship with all stakeholders there at a grassroots level. The majority of staff have lived in the service area for decades and provide a special insight and familiarity for the clients needs and problems. Hence, Icarus staff operate with intuitive knowledge for the lay of the land on gang-related issues, crime, social and economic hardships and deficiencies in service access provisions for the community. We can go where others have not been allowed nor been very successful in winning the confidence of the neighborhood’s residents. As well our Urban Farming program members act in unison with the city’s urban renewal initiatives to give function and clean up, beautify and make safe blighted vacant lots and abandoned structures that riddle every block.
In order to combat lack of education access-related services for the inner-city disabled; Icarus-E exists to provide education information and advocacy, self help support facilitation, and education related training referrals for Chicago’s Englewood community inner-city population suffering from the disenfranchisement effects of poverty, homelessness, failed educational programming and domicile-related familial instability.
SWOT: Icarus-E faces competition for finding opportunities and service provision from only a few well known nonprofit, faith-based entities and governmental services vendors in the targeted Englewood area. Antioch Baptist Church nonprofit services, Ada S. McKinley, Beloved Family Health Services and the City of Chicago’s Team Englewood are such examples.
Icarus’ strength lay in its central location within the heart of Englewood. The company boasts a majority of staff members with a decades long working knowledge of community activities and nuances. However, it is a new start-up organization with minimal past experience in this kind of service partnership while competing for $3 million in RFP city contracts .
