Systems of Engagement Systems of Record
Against this backdrop of massive change in information management, What About Paper?
Per Business Week, June 30, 1975
1975 “Vincent E. Giuliano of Arthur D. Little, Inc., figures that the use of paper in business for records and correspondence should be declining by 1980, ‘and by 1990, most record-handling will be electronic.’”

“The Future of the Office Document,” InfoTrends/CAP Ventures, January 2005.
“Nice thoughts" alone are not a sustainable business strategy. This is not how to sell paperless to your organization in tight times.
Why is this so difficult? 3 Reasons
#1 FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt)
Electronic copies aren’t as acceptable in court as paper.
Digital image copies of information converted from paper (and microfilm) are the legal equivalent of their paper counterparts and may be considered as admissible in evidence as the original paper record in any legal or administrative proceeding... (The Legality of Digital Image Copies of Paper Records, Cohasset Associates)
Even with an electronic copy we can't destroy the paper original.
Digital image copies, like all other types of copies, are acceptable in any legal or administrative proceeding regardless of whether the original is in existence or not ... (The Legality of Digital Image Copies of Paper Records, Cohasset Associates)
#2 Lack of Understanding of the BUSINESS (not the environmental) benefits
Improved Productivity. 7.5 percent of all documents get lost; 3 percent of the remainder get misfiled (Inc. Magazine) Companies misfile up to 20 percent of their records (ARMA International)
Risk Reduction. 80% of information is still retained on paper (CAP Venture) Natural and man-made disasters
Cost Savings. It costs $25,000 to fill a 4 drawer filing cabinet, $2,000 to maintain (futurelawoffice.com) Average cost of courier - $15 15% of an organizations revenues are spent creating, managing & distributing documents 60% of employee time is spent working with document
#3 Thinking Too Tactically The Goal is to Prepare Your Organization for the So-Lo-Mo Revolution You won’t survive with an elegant digital front-end and paper-clogged processes on the back-end. Think business velocity and customer engagement.
