Thanks Gordon. Of course the minute you dive in deeper on Facebook you run in to a whole harry nest of problems. I might like to get paid for some of that work. Painful! ;-)

Facebook UI Simplified (Case Study) - Presentation Transcript

  1. a guerilla consultation May 5, 2009 onSlideshare.net presented by John McElhenney http://uber.la& @jmacofearth
  2. Pop Quiz: Where do the following 4 nav elements go? Can we simplify the experience for clarity? socialmediainnovation group © 2009 John McElhenney
  3. Two navigation elements go to the same destination. Solution: delete [Home] and let the [Logo] stand alone. socialmediainnovation group © 2009 John McElhenney
  4. Again two navigation elements go to the same destination. This time [Name] is also providing orientation information. Solution: Delete the [Profile] socialmediainnovation group © 2009 John McElhenney
  5. Reducing Navigation clutter is always a good idea. Duplicate Nav elements are not just bad design, they are confusing to the user. And now we have a huge open Nav area for future functionality. There’s one more item we can remove. socialmediainnovation group © 2009 John McElhenney
  6. We could also move [Settings] onto the profile page. Since this is where we manage tabs, and profile settings we can combine [Settings] at this point. Settings socialmediainnovation group © 2009 John McElhenney
  7. So we have taken the Top Nav elements from 9 to 6. The user has clearer choices about what’s available. And reducing user fatigue by 33%! 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 socialmediainnovation group © 2009 John McElhenney
