  • 5. Appearance of a disability, especially intellectual disability of a child
    • exerts a strong negative influence on the functioning of the family ,
    • doesn’t strengthen, on the contrary, impairs family relations,
    • causes emotional disorders, frustrations and
    • disturbs relationship between the parents of a child
    • If all these are not remedied the family stays in a state of a permanent crisis which may lead to an eventual breakdown of the family.

  • 6. Factors influencing the condition of the family after the child’s disability occurrence :
    • “ Quality” of the family relations before the disability appears, especially “quality” of the relations between spouses (partners) (their mutual trust, intimacy, closeness, good communication)
    • A disabled child : type and severity of the disability, age which the disability appears in, progress or lack of progress in the development and rehabilitation of a child,
    • Financial and social status of the family
    • Parent’s education level and the ir previous contact with disability
    • Presence of other children in the family
    • Re sponse of the rest of the extended family, friends, neigbours and other people to the disability of a child
    • Direct, immediate support from the professionals and from the local community (early intervention) after the disability occurs.

  • 7. Early intervention means early, multi-disciplinary (medical, psychological and educational), integrated and specialized impact on children with anomalous development combined with the support for their families.
    • Early intervention includes:
    • Early, multidisciplinary diagnosis and assessment of a child, whose psycho-motoric development is irregular in several spheres, since birth till 7 years of age
    • Early, multidisciplinary, continuous and complex therapy according to the individual needs of a child
    • Constant evaluation meant by monitoring development and progress of a child and modifying a therapy programme
    • Psychological support and raising of knowledge and competences of parents, concerning the specific needs of their disabled child.

  • 8. Support for the f amily with a disabled child includes :
      • Psychological support and if necessary psychotherapy and psychiatric intervention
      • raising of knowledge and competences of parents in different forms like briefing, teaching, workshops, seminars etc.
      • Toy and book library, rehabilitation equipment and aids rental,
      • Long and short term respite care,
      • Social help and aid ,
      • Informa tion, counselling, guidance service s
      • Transport
      • Mutual support groups for the families with the similar problems

Their p olicies and daily practice influence… ** where a person who depends on services lives, learns, works, and plays ** what activities fill the person’s da ily life ** who the person gets to know and where the person belongs ** the way the person and others understand who the person is
  • 10. The forms of support for the families with a disabled member have to refer to all of the life’s spheres and have to enable the access to:
    • health care, education, social benefits and housing
    • special aids and rehabilitation equipment
    • social rehabilita tion and daily activity for those who cannot work
    • vocational rehabilitation and training, employment and support in job placement
    • advocacy, personal assistance and legal protection
    • meaningfull and active leasure time activities
    • services in the community, participation in culture, sports and recreation
    • respite care

"The Family at the Heart of the Social Work in Europe" Arras 2009 When someone depends on services for housing, necessary personal assistance, and daily occupation over a long period of time , as many people with severe disabilities do, services b ecome life defining. The fundamental question for those concerned with high quality services for people with severe disabilities is … How can we use our resources to assist the people who rely on us to live better lives?

    • Helpless parents of little children exposed, for different reasons to mental retardation and handicap can find support, diagnosis, stimulation, rehabilitation and education here.

  • 15. Rehabilitation-Education Developmental Centre
      • for 6 8 severely, multiply disabled children,
      • aged 7-24, who, due to their condition,
      • have not received special forms
      • of education and rehabilitation
      • in the public sector .

  • 16. Family support – in the Centre consists of:
    • Assessment of a child and p roviding parent s with comprehensive information about therapeutical and educational program of their child
    • Parent’s Club – support group for parents run by psychologists.
    • Consultations with specialists.
    • I nformation exchange between staff of the Center and parents on the d aily basis.
    • Medical c onsultations in the Center.
    • A ssistance for parents in accordance to help them with formal procedures connected with disability of their child.
    • Fitting up the rehabilitation equipment and special aids .
    • Organization of the leasure time activities.
    • Organization of the financial and in kind support (clothes, weelchairs, furnitures, etc.)
    • Integration of the family environment – ceremonies and events inside and outside the Center.
    • Special transport provision

    • Education and rehabilitation at home in case of the bad health condition.
    • Respite care: casual and short term program s at the family home.
    • Personal assistance for the summer vacation trips and stays.
    • Support for parents during the participant’s hospitalization

        • where 20 adults with severe intellectual disability have their daily occupational, art and music therapy activities and social rehabilitation.

      • for 55 adults with intellectual disability vocational training, self service skills training, rehabilitation, day care and recreation are provided there.

      • T he first in our country cultural establishment which promotes achievements of artists with intellectual disability.
      • P rofessionally prepared exhibitions allow to see a person with di s ability through his or her abilities and talents.
      • The gallery runs a data-base of the artists with intellectual disability.
