Jealousy and Envy
Envy is the desire to have something
that is not your own
Envy is spite and resentment at the
success of another person
Jealousy is an emotion and typically
refers to the negative thoughts and
feelings of insecurity, fear, and anxiety
over an anticipated loss of something
The acts of the sinful nature are obvious:
sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery;
idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord,
jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition,
dissensions, factions and envy;
drunkenness, orgies, and the like.
For if you live according to the sinful nature,
you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to
death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.
– Romans 8:13 –
Most feel that jealousy is justified
You are only torturing yourself
What you fear most will come true
Jealousy is a dragon
Dragons hide and come to destroy
Don’t ignore the dragon
The jealous are troublesome to others,
but a torment to themselves.
– William Penn –
I came that they may have life,
and have it abundantly.
– John 10:10 –
You are still worldly.
For since there is jealousy and quarreling
among you, are you not worldly?
Are you not acting like mere men?
– 1 Corinthians 3:3 –
I am afraid that when I come I may not find
you as I want you to be, and you may not
find me as you want me to be.
I fear that there may be quarreling,
jealousy, outbursts of anger, factions,
slander, gossip, arrogance and disorder.
– 2 Corinthians 12:20 –
Anger is cruel and fury overwhelming,
but who can stand before jealousy?
– Proverbs 27:4 –
How To Slay Jealousy
Jealousy comes from a lack of self-worth
We must know our own worth
Our worth is found in God’s perspective
We are called “more than conquerors”
We are called sons of God
Envy is a symptom of lack of
appreciation of our own uniqueness
and self worth. Each of us has
something to give that no one else has.
– Elizabeth O'Connor –
For your sake we face death all day long;
we are considered
as sheep to be slaughtered.
No, in all these things we are more than
conquerors through him who loved us.
– Romans 8:36-37 –
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his
mighty power. Put on the full armor of God
so that you can take your stand against the
devil's schemes. For our struggle is not
against flesh and blood, but against the
rulers, against the authorities, against the
powers of this dark world and against the
spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
– Ephesians 6:10-12 –
