  2. 2. What is E-Rate? <br />The Schools and Libraries Program of the Universal Service Fund is better known as E-Rate.<br />

  4. 4. The Purpose <br /> Provides discounts to assist most schools and libraries in the United States to obtain affordable telecommunications and Internet access.<br />
  5. 5. E-Rate<br /> Funding for 4 areas that are the pipeline for connectivity: <br />1.Telecommunications <br />2.Internet access<br />3.Internal connections<br />4. Basic maintenance of internal connections. <br />
  6. 6. Determining Factors:<br />Discounts depend on poverty level <br />Urban and economic status of population served. <br />Discounts range from 20% to 90% of the costs of eligible services.<br /> Eligible schools, school districts and libraries may apply individually or as part of a consortium.<br />
  7. 7. School Eligibility <br /> * Schools must provide elementary or secondary education as determined under state law.<br /> * Schools may be public or private institutional day or residential schools, or public charter schools.<br /> * Schools must operate as non-profit businesses.<br /> * Schools cannot have an endowment exceeding $50 million.<br />

Libraries<br />Libraries must meet the statutory definition of library(1996 Library and Services Act)<br />Libraries must be eligible for assistance from a state library administrative agency under that Act.<br />Separate budget from school. <br />Libraries cannot operate as for-profit businesses.<br />
