1. How does your media product
represent particular social groups?
2. Gender
Both genders are represented in my magazine as I have pictures of both males and females.
In the photos of my main model she is in quite seductive poses, this was done in order to
attract a male audience. The poses can been seen as be seen both in a positive and
negative light. They can be seen as positive as the images convey the confidence and
independence of my model through both the text and images. The images can be seen
negatively as the seductive poses can convey promiscuity, negatively representing the
female gender, however this was never my intention when taking the photographs. The
pictures of my male model show him rather seriously and convey an feeling of male
dominance, this can make them be seen negatively especially because the hood is up on
the image, this however was not my intention as I simply wanted to conform to the
conventions of the genre I was portraying in my magazine.
3. Age
• The age group represented in my magazine is 16-29, I chose to represent a young
age group as this age group is the most interested in the genre of music my
magazine is based upon. In my magazine I did try to represent them positively,
through both my text and images, the way I wanted to portray the age group was
as strong, confident, independent and driven, and convey a positive message to
the rest of the age group through the text, specifically more towards the end of my
article. However the same issue that happens with the representation of gender
occurs within age group as well, as someone could see the images as representing
the age group of 16-29 as promiscuous through the poses my model is in. This is
the same for the images of my male model, they an be seen as portraying the age
group negatively as the hood is up and many people see this as a negative thing,
again this was not my intention when taking the photos.
4. Social Class
• The main social class I wanted to represent in my magazine was working class. I
intended to do this through the clothing that my model was wearing as I wanted
people to identify with the model I used in my photo shoot. I think I gave a positive
representation of the working class through my products as I represented them as
independent, strong, successful and confident.
