  • Washington D.C. Situated on the north-west coast of the USA on the Potomac River. Lies in a special territory called the District of Columbia (DC). It was named after the first US president, George Washington.

  • Washington D.C. The capital of the USA. The seat of the federal government of the United States. About 600, 000 people, 70% of them black. About 360, 000 people are employed by the Federal Government.
  • Places of interest – the Capitol Situated on Capitol Hill. The highest building in Washington D.C. Home to the Senate and the House of Representatives. The bronze Statue of Freedom on the top of the building.
  • Places of interest – the White House The official residence of the President of the US. Offices and official places on the first floor. Private rooms on the second and third floor. It has 132 rooms and 20 baths and showers. Some rooms are open to the public (East Room).
  • Places of interest – the Mall Two miles long boulevard. All of important buildings are situated here. The majority of buildings are made of white marble. An area with a lot of museums and parks.
  • Places of interest – Washington Monument The symbol of the President Washington and Washington city. The world’s tallest stone structure. About 170m high and 4,5m wide at base. It serves as a lookout tower. Nickname is „The Needle“
  • Places of interest – Pentagon The headquarters of the Ministry of Defense. Largest office building in the world, situated in Arlington. About 23, 000 employees work here. Called the Pentagon because of its shape.
  • Places of interest –Arlington National Cemetery Soldiers have been buried here since the Civil War. Over 260, 000 graves. The graves of famous personalities of American history. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
  • Places of interest – Lincoln Memorial Built in the classic style of a Greek temple. Inside is 6m high marble statue of Abraham Lincoln seated in a chair.
  • Places of interest – Vietnam Veterans Memorial Black granite wall covered with silver names of 60, 000 soldiers who were killed or missing in the Vietnam War.
