  2. 2. Acts 17:1 NKJV Now when they had passed throughAmphipolis and Apollonia, they came toThessalonica, where there was a synagogue of theJews.
  3. 3. Located about 100 miles southwest ofPhilippi, named after the half-sisterof Alexander the Great.Thessalonica was the largest city inMacedonia possibly around200,000, and is currently the secondlargest city in Greece with over 1million residents in metropolitan area.

Acts 17:2-4 NKJV Then Paul, as hiscustom was, went in to them, and forthree Sabbaths reasoned with them fromthe Scriptures, (3) explaining anddemonstrating that the Christ had tosuffer and rise again from the dead, andsaying, "This Jesus whom I preach to youis the Christ." (4) And some of themwere persuaded; and a great multitude ofthe devout Greeks, and not a few of theleading women, joined Paul and Silas.For many it takestime for theGospel to sink in

The word can mean amere acknowledgement of the truth.James 2:19 KJV Thou believest that thereis one God; thou doest well: the devils alsobelieve, and tremble.NOT the word used in Acts 17:4

Persuaded or Believed?Acts 17:4 NKJV And some ofthem were persuaded; and agreat multitude of thedevout Greeks, and not a fewof the leadingwomen, joined Paul andSilas.Acts 17:4 KJV And some ofthem believed, and consortedwith Paul and Silas; and of thedevout Greeks a greatmultitude, and of the chiefwomen not a few.B e l i e v eIn the Greek, “pitis” means faith, truth orthe conviction or a truth. Most oftentranslated “faith.”Hebrews 11:1 ESV Now faith is theassurance of things hoped for, theconviction of things not seen.Hebrews 11:6 NKJV But without faith (pistis) it isimpossible to please Him, for he who comes to Godmust believe (piteuō) that He is, and that He is arewarder of those who diligently seek Him.NOT the word used in Acts 17:4

Persuaded or Believed?Acts 17:4 NKJV And some ofthem were persuaded; and agreat multitude of thedevout Greeks, and not a fewof the leadingwomen, joined Paul andSilas.Acts 17:4 KJV And some ofthem believed, and consortedwith Paul and Silas; and of thedevout Greeks a greatmultitude, and of the chiefwomen not a few.P e r s u a d e d“Peithō” is the word used here. The wordbasically means persuade as many moderntranslations use, but that word is lacking.
  8. 8.  Literally it means to persuade or to win over. We are talking about obedience! According to Vines, “the obdeience suggested is not bysubmission to authority [hupakouō], but resulting from persuasion.” Vines also says, “Peitho and pisteuo, to trust, are closely relatedetymologically; the difference in meaning is that the former impliesthe obedience that is produced by the latter.”Hebrews 13:17 NKJV Obey (peithō) those who rule overyou, and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls, asthose who must give account. Let them do so with joy andnot with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you.
