• 1. Brief Notes | Civil Defence is identified to be an important school goal. Mathematical modelling is a new area in the 2013 curriculum.
• 2. Brief Notes | Singapore is generally spared of natural disasters. We have flash floods from time to time.
• 3. Brief Notes | Reading materials such as newspaper report and children’s books on fire in San Francisco and London are chosen for students to appreciate the idea of urban disasters and also on text types.
• 4. Brief Notes | Using the theme of flood, different subject teachers can plan their research lesson. For mathematics, average is selected for Primary 5 students.
• 5. Brief Notes | The lesson is based on finding out where in the school they should place rain gauges.
• 6. Brief Notes | First set of lessons are on the idea of rain gauge i.e. the use of height as a proxy to measure rainfall.
• 7. Brief Notes | Second set of lessons are on how to arrive at a measure of amount of rainfall in a day, a week and a month. Third set of lessons are on the idea of making predictions if it will rain on any one day.
• 8. Brief Notes | It is found that the idea of a measure of central is difficult for students. The calculation itself is not difficult.
• 9. Brief Notes | Teacher characteristics that are productive in professional learning through lesson study are investigated.
