  • SMART FISHING Luke 5:1-11
    • 1 One day as Jesus was preaching on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, great crowds pressed in on him to listen to the word of God. 2 He noticed two empty boats at the water’s edge, for the fishermen had left them and were washing their nets. 3 Stepping into one of the boats, Jesus asked Simon, its owner, to push it out into the water. So he sat in the boat and taught the crowds from there.  4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Now go out where it is deeper, and let down your nets to catch some fish.”
    •   5 “Master,” Simon replied, “we worked hard all last night and didn’t catch a thing. But if you say so, I’ll let the nets down again.” 6 And this time their nets were so full of fish they began to tear! 7 A shout for help brought their partners in the other boat, and soon both boats were filled with fish and on the verge of sinking.
Luke 5:1-11  (New Living Translation) DEMON, BEGONE!
    • 8 When Simon Peter realized what had happened, he fell to his knees before Jesus and said, “Oh, Lord, please leave me—I’m too much of a sinner to be around you.” 9 For he was awestruck by the number of fish they had caught, as were the others with him. 10 His partners, James and John, the sons of Zebedee, were also amazed.
    •     Jesus replied to Simon, “Don’t be afraid! From now on you’ll be fishing for people!” 11 And as soon as they landed, they left everything and followed Jesus.

  • THE LAKE GENESSARET…THE CENTER OF JESUS MINISTRY AND MIRACLES Luke 5:1-3
    • The Sea of Galilee…Jesus spent most of his three-year ministry here
    • Half of his parables…told here
    • Most of his miracles too
1 One day as Jesus was preaching on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, great crowds pressed in on him to listen to the word of God. 2 He noticed two empty boats at the water’s edge, for the fishermen had left them and were washing their nets. 3 Stepping into one of the boats, Jesus asked Simon, its owner, to push it out into the water. • AN UNUSUAL APPROACH… DAYTIME FISHING Luke 5:4
    • Deep water…more difficult than the shallows
    • Those ancient nets were made of have cord…to visible to fish in the daytime
4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Now go out where it is deeper, and let down your nets to catch some fish.”
  • FAITH THAT WILL TRY IT AGAIN …JUST BECAUSE Luke 5:5
    • Because Jesus wisdom is greater than my experience
    • Because Jesus is Lord
5 “Master,” Simon replied, “we worked hard all last night and didn’t catch a thing. But if you say so, I’ll let the nets down again.”
  • THE RESULTS…A CATCH OF AMAZING PROPORTIONS Luke 5:6-7
    • Thousands of fish heed Jesus call and pack themselves into the bulging nets.
    • Help is needed to handle the horde.
6 And this time their nets were so full of fish they began to tear! 7 A shout for help brought their partners in the other boat, and soon both boats were filled with fish and on the verge of sinking.
  • I believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God. I trust Him as my Lord and Savior. Confession

  • WILL I SEE THE MAJESTY AND HOLINESS OF JESUS AND JOIN JOB, ISAIAH AND PETER Luke 5:8-9
    • “ My ears had heard you but now my eyes have seen you. Therefore I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes.” Job 42:5,6
    • “ Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined. For I am a man of unclean lips…and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty. “ Isaiah 6:6
    • “ Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” Peter, Luke 5:8
8 When Simon Peter realized what had happened, he fell to his knees before Jesus and said, “Oh, Lord, please leave me—I’m too much of a sinner to be around you.” 9 For he was awestruck by the number of fish they had caught, as were the others with him.
  • PART-TIME FOLLOWERS WATCH JESUS AT WORK…PREACHING AND FISHING…AND COMMIT THEIR LIVES TO HIM Luke 5:9-11
    • They’d seen other miracles
    • He’d called them at another time
    • This mighty miracle has them running to follow him for keeps
9 For he was awestruck by the number of fish they had caught, as were the others with him. 10 His partners, James and John, the sons of Zebedee, were also amazed.     Jesus replied to Simon, “Don’t be afraid! From now on you’ll be fishing for people!” 11 And as soon as they landed, they left everything and followed Jesus.
  • FISHING LESSONS, ANYBODY?
    • The same old ways of fishing need to be subject to a closer look at Jesus’ teaching and commands.
    • Sometimes the toughest folk to get tuned in to more effective casting are tired fishermen.
    • If I fall on my face before Jesus, my Lord, I’ll be open to hearing his voice, feeling his nudges and trying new strategies for Fishing For Folk.
    • Cutting through 2000 years of tradition is a daunting journey…but worth the effort.
    • It may be time to leave the shallows and head for deeper water, even if it is more risky and we are bushed from years of plying the waters from shore.
