Lk 9 49-50_not-one-of-us Presentation Transcript

  • 1. NOT ONE OF US? THE VERY THOUGHT! Luke 9:49-50
  • 2.
    • On the Right Side
    • 9:49 John answered, “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him because he is not a disciple along with us.” 9:50 But Jesus said to him, “Do not stop him, for whoever is not against you is for you.”

  • 3. TAKE HOME
    • Putting a corral around the church may be God’s business…but it isn’t ours.
    • The genius of the Restoration Movement is inclusion rather than exclusion.
    • Although we are in a ‘group’, we can’t call our group the only group.
    • Unity goes beyond mere tolerance to love and affection.
  • 4. Opening Prayer
  • 5. Announcements
  • 6. Worship
  • 7. How Could This Be… Another Band Of Miracle Men, Healing In Jesus’ Name??
    • The very thought of this is astonishing. “I am the way…the truth…the life…” John 14:6
    • Yet the story reads as if Jesus is not rattled by the news of others casting out demons in his name.
  • 8. How Do I View Other Believers Who Aren’t Of My Stripe?
    • I have to be careful that my pathway is not more narrow than that of Jesus.
    • Coming up with a list of Heaven’s entrance requirements is risky business, indeed.
    • Culture, Nationality, Language and Geography will cause some believers to be quite unlike me from the get go.
  • 9. The Campbell Men Preached Unity, Restoration And Mission! What Do You Think Of That? How’s That For A Good Start?
    • Our Standard (1809) Let’s go over your insert
    Alexander Campbell as a young man (1788 – 1866)
  • 10. I believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God. I trust him as my Lord and Savior. Confession

  • 12. Offering
  • 13. We Walk A Wide Path. There Is Room For All Sorts Of Music Styles, Architecture, Styles Of Dress, Orders Of Worship Service, Formal And Informal.
    • Unity doesn’t imply uniformity.
    • Requiring others to be just like us robs us of great joy and fellowship.
    • Using a ‘list’ from the Bible would have us requiring the Holy Kiss, Foot Washing and Women staying hush in church. Do we really want that?
  • 14. God Calls Us To A Special Unity
    • It springs from Jesus being our common Lord. --Ephesians 4:4
    • It is cultivated by love, humility patience and gentleness. --Ephesians 4:2,3
    • Bearing with one another and forgiving grievances. --Colossians 3:12-16
  • 15. Worship
  • 16. Prayer
