  • 11. “ YOU ARE THE SALT OF THE EARTH” A saying of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:13). He used salt as a metaphor to mean that his followers are to influence the world around them, just as salt adds flavor whenever it is added to food. The expression salt of the earth is now used to refer to a good, decent, hardworking person—the sort of person one would want as a neighbor.
  • 12. Matthew 5:13 Matthew 5:13 (New American Standard) "You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how will it be made salty again? It is good for nothing anymore, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men. Matthew 5:13 (The Message Bible) "Let me tell you why you are here. You're here to be salt-seasoning that brings out the God-flavors of this earth. If you lose your saltiness, how will people taste godliness? You've lost your usefulness and will end up in the garbage.
