According to the FBI’s National Crime Information Centre, the number of reported laptop thefts continues to rise witha48%increaseoverthelasttwoyears. A survey was conducted by Intel and Ponemon Institute on stolen laptops. The survey covered 329 organizations. The number of reported lost laptops were more than 86,000 in year 2010. The Ponemon Institute reported that a lost laptop holds data worth $49,246 on an average. It means that each organization on an average lost $6.4 million and a combined loss amounted to $2.1 billion. Protectyourcapitalinvestmentandyourcompany'ssecretsbyfollowing theseguidelinestoprovidebetterlaptopsecurity………….. • Noplaceissafe… Never assume your laptop will be safe just sitting around. Think as if it was $1,000 in cash lying around and lock it down using a cable lock or securedockingstation.Qualcomm'sCEOhadhislaptopstolenduringa news conference, while he was standing no more than 30 feet from it. In another instance, an employee had his laptop stolen from a conferenceroomandlosthisjob. • Useanon-descriptcarryingcase… Nothing says "Steal me" like walking around a public place with a leather laptop case with the manufacturers or your company's logo stamped on the side. Consider buying a form fitting padded sleeve for your laptop and carry it in a backpack, courier bag, briefcase or other commonnon-descriptcarryingcase. • Bewareofpayphones... Cell phones are greatif you are within your callingarea, but due tolack of nationwide connectivity, the business travellers often have to use the payphones in airports, restaurants and hotel lobbies. Incidentally, these are also places where thieves like to hang around. While you are worried about covering up your credit card number as you dial the keypad, opportunist thieves are waiting to see if you set your laptop case down. If you are travelling with someone else, use the buddy system to watch each others back instead of making calls at the same time. • Whentravellingbyair.... There are number of sophisticated professional crime rings that prey on business travellers carrying laptops. They look for brand new, high end laptops and often shadow the airport curb side check- in and rental car check-in counters, airport shops and security checkpoints. If the thieves can't steal your laptop while you are occupied with the security process, they will often wait until you have a seat in the waitingareaorintheairportbar. • Whilestayinginahotel... If you keep your laptop in your hotel room, anchor it securely to a metal post or a fixed object. Consider a motion alarm for your laptop, as wellas for your room. When not in your room, considerlockingyour laptopinthehotel'ssafe.(Makesureyougetareceipt). • Whenattendingconventionsandconferences... Laptop thieves target business conferences and conventions because they know you'll feel more comfortable with your peers. They look for events that use the same facilities for a few days because they're counting on you to become lax as you become used to the surroundingsandstarttofeelsafe.MostconventionsonlycheckID'sat the beginning. By the afternoon, when you're tired and have let your guard down, thieves can walk in and out of the conference rooms withoutbeingchallengedorevennoticed. • Makesecurityahabit... Get into the habit of locking your laptop when you're not workingwith it, or when storing it. Use common sense when travelling and try to stay in physical contact with your laptop at all times. If you are travelling with trusted friends or business associates use the "buddy system"towatcheachotherslaptops. • Engravethelaptop... Permanently marking the outer case of the laptop with your company name, address, and phone number may greatly increase your chances of getting it back, if you happen to carelessly leave it in a hotel room. There are also a number of metal tamper resistant commercial asset tags available that could help the police return your hardware, if it is recovered. According to the FBI, 97%ofunmarkedcomputersareneverrecovered. • Completeregistrationprocesswiththelaptopmanufacturer... We've become so used to throwing away the registration cards for all the electronic items we buy every day because we think that it only adds to our paper storage. Registering your laptop with the manufacturer will "flag" it. If a thief ever sends it in for maintenance, it increases your chances of getting it back. It also pays to write down yourlaptop'sserialnumberandstoreitinasafeplace. • UseCablelock... Over 80% of the laptops in the market are equipped with a Universal Security Slot (USS) that allows them to be attached to a cable lock or laptop alarm. Remember thattheyonly workif you use them properly. Lockthemtoastrongimmovableandunbreakableobject. • Helpfromtrackingsoftware... There are a number of vendors that work with the police, Phone Company and Internet service providers to track and recover stolen laptops. CompuTrace, SecureIT, Stealth Signal, and ZTrace provide trackingservicesforcorporationsandindividuals. AjayTripathi AssistantProfessor - Brian Tracy Management is everything you do.
