A rock is a naturally formed mixture of mineral matter.
Types of Rocks• Igneous•Metamorphic•Sedimentary
Rock type is determined by how the rock was formed.1. Igneous rocks are formed from lava2. Metamorphic rocks are created by heat and pressure3. Sedimentary rocks are formed from particles of sediment
Sedimentary rocks are formed by the compaction of sediments
The Rock CycleThe rock cycle is a fundamental concept in geology that describes the dynamictransitions through geologic time among the three main rock types: sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous. As the diagram to the right illustrates, each type of rock isaltered or destroyed when it is forced out of its equilibrium conditions. An igneous rocksuch as basalt may break down and dissolve when exposed to the atmosphere, or meltas it is subducted under a continent. Due to the driving forces of the rock cycle, platetectonics and the water cycle, rocks do not remain in equilibrium and are forced tochange as they encounter new environments. The rock cycle is an illustration thatexplains how the 3 rock types are related to each other and how processes change fromone type to another over time. Bad Slide!
