“Digital First” and Issues Publishing to the Web
What’s wrong with that?
Online is its own unique medium, and requires “extras” to create value for Web visitors.
Web producers and online editors didn’t have time to be involved in story planning.
Issue:
In many newsrooms—newspaper, radio, and television—the Web department began as a separate entity.
Enter the concept of “shoveling” – simply taking your stories and dumping them online.

Instead:
Online editors and Web producers are now part of the process earlier in the day.
Think “Web first”, instead of it being an afterthought
Wichita Eagle goes “digital first”

News v. Advertising
Advertising today remains the primary source of funding for news.
As you enter your career in reporting, know this fundamental truth exists (I didn’t).
77% of reporters say they can tolerate loud, ugly ads surrounding their stories because they know newspapers need to make money
