  • Hello – I’m Jill Beck, a Business Education Teacher here at Garden Spot High School in ELANCO School District. I have been asked by our principal to put together a proposal for online course evaluation.
  • In this presentation we will discuss our school setting, our ELANCO Online audience, and online program evaluation criteria
  • So let’s first take a look at our school setting.
  • We currently have about 3100 students attending ELANCO School District. There are however about 500 students within our district that are not attending public school. About 400 students are attending private school and about 100 of our students are attending school online. These 100 students are an important factor to us here in ELANCO because they are very costly. Pennsylvania advertises to parents that their children can attend and online education institution for free, however someone is paying their tuition and that happens to be the public school. The public school is required to pay the tuition that someone would pay if they were living in another district, but attending our public schools. As you can see it is quite costly. We pay anywhere from $8000 to about $14000 per student. This is a large reason why we have brought online education in house. There is a very large demand and the cost is also very large.
  • So who is attending online education and what are their reasons?
  • What we have found is that the students are all very different – all different levels of income and cultures. We also discovered that their reasons for attending online education are quite varied, it seems that each student has their own specific reason for attending online education.
  • We wanted to give students an incentive to attend our online program here at ELANCO. We created an online program that offers options that they may not be able to receive from other online schools. First, students can receive a diploma from ELANCO. This becomes very attractive because not all universities and military programs accept students who receive diplomas from some online schools. Second, students who attend ELANCOnLine can participate in all ELANCO activities including sports, marching band, clubs, dances, prom, and the performing artsLastly, we provide opportunities for students to meet face-to-face with our highly qualified teachers in our buildings. Our instructors are physically located in the same school district as our students – this is not always true for other online schools. The instructor could be hours away.
  • Now that you understand the reasons for ELANCO to bring online education in-house and know the advantages for students to attend our virtual school, lets discuss how to evaluate an online program.
