Capability
Following the third nuclear test conducted in February in 2013 by the Korean peninsula, the nation apparently
again announced the revival of Pyongyang's chief plutonium processing plant, The Yongbyon reactor.
It has been reported from North Korea on 2nd of April, Tuesday that the scientists shall soon instigate
"readjusting and restarting" the facilities at its main Pyongyang nuclear complex. The complex which had
previously been shut due to international nuclear disarmament negotiations in 2007.
Aplutonium reactor and a Uranium enrichment plant, both fuel producers for nuclear weapons would conduct
operations accordingly, as per the officials. Countries like The United States and its allies have been highly
alarmed and threatened since the hearsay broke out from Korean land.
Moreover the North Korean region has also entered into a combat stage with its corresponding of South
regions. Not that the country hasn’t disputed previously and surpassed bomb blast threats to countries like
Japan and The U.S. However this time the country seems to be much fumed with war footing.
The U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry proclaimed that his country would protect and defend itself along with
South Korea and Japan as Pyongyang continues to create turmoil in international interests.
Mr. Kerry also termed the country’s conduct as “unacceptable”.
More about the talked Pyongyang’s Yongbyon reactor:
1985 - A 5MWe small, prototype soon connected to a Magnox system of 50MWe, represented
after the Calder Hall reactor in UK got revealed online for the first time. It comprised of every
material that could cause an intense explosion.
1994 - The construction of the 50MWe reactor was stopped a year ahead of it which was
terminated by The US-North Korea Agreed Framework.
2003 - However after discussions in 2002 the construction restarted producing almost 6 kg of
plutonium yearly. The platinum produced was much more than the plutonium to power North
Korea's nuclear tests occurred in year 2006 & 2009.
2007 - The reactor’s working was once again jolted following the series of meetings with six
participating states/countries (Six Party talks). In order to ensure an entire shutdown the IAEA
(International Atomic Energy Agency) inspectors granted heavy fuel oil of 50 thousand tons for
sealing the plant and permitting inspections for the work stoppage.
2010 - After reopening the Yongbyan reactor once more in 2009, North Korea enlarged the reactor
with a smaller water reactor and 2 thousand gas-centrifuge uranium fortification plant. The system
is capable to produce plutonium of weapon-grade from that 50MWe reactor's used up fuel rods
which can be used for civilian power and heat generation basically.
