    1. IN-ROAD SENSOR Part of the Sydney Coordi- nated Adaptive Traffic System (SCATS) installed and man- aged by RTA. “A wire loop buried in the roadway triggers traffic lights. A signal is induced in the loop when a large metal object – a car, motorbike or heavy vehicle moves across it.” - www.openroad.com.au APPLICATION Data provide assistance to traffic flow management by triggering the traffic lights to automatically adjusting the length of their cycles. Data are also collected by RTA’s Traffic Management Centre allowing both cen- tralised and distributed traffic control in real-time.

    3. COMMUTER ITINERARY Cityrail ticket vending ma- chines and ticket validation gates. The vending machines are able to read, write and log itinerary information from the magnetic strip. The gates can read and log but cannot write to the ticket. APPLICATION Itinerary data assists Cit- yrail manage its resource to meet customer needs. Government planning bodies also use these data to assess and develop public infrustracture and urban planning projects.

    5. VISITOR COUNTER Visitor counters are embed- ded in the floor of public library entries. Patrons step on the counters or detected by thermal sensor and this will trigger the counter to log visitor numbers. APPLICATION Local and state governments use these data to assess the usage of public services and community cultural engage- ment which would lead to the development of planning strat- egies and funding decisions.
