  • 1. City Commission VA-23-10 TNT Fireworks 768 East Dania Beach Boulevard
  • 2. Location Map
  • 3. Variance
    • To allow for a monument sign using LED digital
    • display; city code prohibits signs with illuminations
    • that flash, move, rotate, scintillate, blink, flicker, or
    • vary in intensity or color, except for any portion of a
    • sign containing time-temperature-date information.
  • 4. Property Information
    • ZONING:
    • Transit Oriented Commercial (TOC-1)
    • FUTURE LAND USE:
    • Regional Activity Center (RAC)
    • OVERLAY DISTRICT:
    • Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA)
    • Commercial Arterial Design District
  • 5. Property Information
    • The property is an existing fireworks retail store located on the south side of East Dania Beach Blvd.
    • The applicant applied for a building permit to erect a monument sign with a 36 square foot digital display.
    • Digital signage is not identified in the City’s sign regulations; the permit was rejected due to the ability of such signage to move, change, and pose distractions, which is prohibited by city code.
    • The proposed monument sign otherwise meets city height and size regulations.
  • 6. Proposed Sign
  • 7. Planning & Zoning Board Recommendation
    • On June 16 th , the Planning and Zoning
    • Board recommended approval of this
    • item.
  • 8. Staff Recommendation
    • Allowing a full color, changing digital display would confer a
    • special privilege that is denied to all other sites both within this
    • zoning district, and all the city’s zoning districts. This request is
    • not in harmony with the intent of the sign code nor the vision of
    • the CRA Redevelopment Plan.
    • Community Development staff and the CRA Director recommend
    • denial.
