Leadership and Management Principles
Written, Collected, and Edited Principles of Leadership
Look for team players. Hire people with different skills and personalities but with similar values, and
then build them into a team.
Leaders challenge the status quo. They promote a clash of ideas. They allow subordinates to argue
and clash with them. However, they drive issues toward decisions; once they have heard enough,
they make decisions and then count on their team to execute it with full passion. Follow leaders who
encourage this and embrace decisions once they have been made.
Encourage a noisy system. Put people at ease by listening to them; Encourage people to talk;
genuinely desire to want what people know. avoid defensiveness. Listen with your mind and your
heart. Maintain an open-door policy. Let people see you when you're there, and be sure to give special
access to those closest to you.
Probe the organization. Walk the \"grounds\" everyday, allowing people
access to you. If you uncover something affecting your organization or
team that requires attention, close the loop and let those involved know
the outcome.
Reward your best performers and get rid of your non-performers. You
must constantly prune. Otherwise, the leader who doesn't prune out the
bad risks watching the good turn bad.
Have fun in your role. Add humor. Make work play wherever possible. Also maintain hobbies outside
of work that can settle your mind.
Remember that perpetual optimism is a force multiplier. Always assure those around you that the
team will make it, that the problem will be solved. At the same time, don't do so with false statements.
Build Strong Client and Other External Relationships. The success of a firm depends on the quality of
its relationships with a broad group of influential stakeholders. The best leaders successfully develop
long-term relationships across multiple cultures. They succeed through outstanding client service on
top of their internal work.
Foster Learning, Innovation, and Change. Leaders welcome and drive change. They constantly extract
learning from their own failures and successes as well as those of others--both internal and external to
the business. They build on past success but also take the entrepreneurial risks necessary to innovate
and grow their business.
Create Trust and Credibility Through Honest Communication. Our best leaders communicate fully,
directly and candidly, and they follow with action. They are also good listeners. Above all, they
recognize that the power of their personal example is greater than the power of their words.
Develop or Fire
Never use people who you have no intent to develop or keep people who are unteachable.
Establish a Positive Environment - Notice the good and encourage creativity. Oppose criticism of new
and yet immature thought. Nit picking on others weaknesses and without seeing the whole person
must be opposed. Constructive criticism should be welcome by all.
Empower, empower, empower
know yourself and seek self-improvement.
know your employees and look out for their welfare.
seek responsibility and take responsibility for your actions.
Management
Be careful doing business. (collect money first or do a background check)
Do not be dependent on any customer (diversify and have more than just a key account.)
Ask for help; do not be an island.
You should make every effort to understand the next two layers of leadership that are over you.
Be technically and tactically proficient. But this should always be subordinate to proper leadership.
Employ your team in accordance with its capabilities.
Ensure assigned tasks are understood, supervised, and accomplished.
Finally,
Add Faith, Hope, Love. While these words are not used often in business they are core data for
making the business run. Have faith in people when they cannot have faith in themselves. Have Hope
for them that helps you see them as more than they are today. (but do not lose your edge) Love them,
meaning appreciate them and who God made them to be.
