NSW BOS Syllabus ↔ ACARA AustCurric
Implementation of the Australian Curriculum Content Descriptors, without change
NSW did not sign up to implement the elaborations
NSW Teachers only have to be concerned with NSW Syllabus (by implementing this, you implement the AC)
3
Thursday, 16 June 2011
Development of Syllabus
The Current NSW Syllabus document have been acknowledged as a ‘quality document’
Direction taken from “direction for syllabus writers” document
Team of both primary and secondary mathematics writers
4
Thursday, 16 June 2011
Features of the new Syllabus
Section 1 (pg 8) – Introduction, the same for all subjects
Section 2 (pg 11) – Rationale (rewritten for NSW, not ACARA’s
Section 3 (pg 12) – Place of the Mathematics Curriculum
Section 4 (pg 14) – Aims (these are from Acara, although one has been left out and incorporated in the objectives)
Section 5 (pg 15) – Objectives (Knowledge and Skills > WM, NA, MG, SP (new, from ACARA) and Values (updated)
Section 9.2 (pg358) – Stage Statements
Section 10 (pg358) – Assessment
5
Thursday, 16 June 2011
Organisation of Content (p22)
Target diagram on
pg 22 now includes
Yr 7-10 (previously
Just K-6)
6
Thursday, 16 June 2011
Organisation of Content (p22)
“Working Mathematically” Understanding, Fluency, Problem Solving and Reasoning descriptions are from AC
Table linking Stage 5 pathways to Stage 6 (i.e. the important topics for stage 6 courses)
Additional content has been reviewed and restructured
Cross-curriculum areas are from ACARA, but the descriptions have been written by BoS as to what they might look like for Maths. Some have not been included (e.g. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders / ASIA)
7
Thursday, 16 June 2011
Presentation of Content
Presented in stages (except for 7-10 life skills)
Stage 5 is treated as one stage (i.e. 5.1, 5.2 and 5.3 is all together for each substrand
Each stage is arranged by the 3 AC strands and then substrands
Generally content is in the stages prescribed by ACARA (some has been move earlier, e.g. Pythagoras’ Theorem has been moved to Stage 4, but is in Year 9 AC) – there was too much content in Stage 5, but not enough in stage 4
Stage 4 and 5 substrands have been strengthened
8
Thursday, 16 June 2011
Presentation of Content
9
Thursday, 16 June 2011
Treatment of Outcomes
Previously 1 outcome per topic. Now there are many.
Stage 4 and 5 have reduced the outcomes from 75 to 42
WM Outcomes are more prominent (at the top of each page
WM has 3 outcomes
10
Thursday, 16 June 2011
Working Mathematically Outcomes
*.1 outcomes are ‘representation and communication’
*.2 outcomes are problem solving
*.3 outcomes are reasoning
No outcomes for Fluency and Understanding, as these are addressed in the content
*.4, *.5 etc. outcomes are for content
Only ONE content outcome per substrand
11
Thursday, 16 June 2011
Feedback
Please give your feedback
My feedback:
Please write AC code next to AC content descriptor. This will allow for easy reference to content descriptors and searching the internet for resources will make it much easier!
Please use ACARAs icons for cross curriculum priorities rather than [N] [CCT] etc.
12
Thursday, 16 June 2011
