  11. 11. Human Growth and Development What is personal hygiene???
  12. 12. Personal hygiene is a routine of personal care that keep you clean and healthy. It involves your hair, skin, face, teeth, ears, hands, nails and feet.
  13. 13. Why is it important? Poor hygiene can lead to: <ul><li>Loss of friends </li></ul><ul><li>More chance of disease </li></ul><ul><li>Loss of teeth </li></ul><ul><li>Infections </li></ul><ul><li>Poor self image </li></ul>
  14. 14. Good hygiene helps you by: <ul><li>Keeping you clean and removing dirt and germs </li></ul><ul><li>Helping you look and feel your best </li></ul><ul><li>Making you attractive to others </li></ul><ul><li>Keeping your body in top condition </li></ul>

What can I do???? <ul><li>Shower or bathe 1-2 times per day – paying special attention to your underarms! </li></ul><ul><li>Wash your face more often if needed </li></ul><ul><li>Use deodorant- sometimes others notice YOUR body odor before you do! </li></ul><ul><li>Wear clean clothes everyday </li></ul><ul><li>Shampoo hair regularly </li></ul>

  17. 17. <ul><li>Brush with a fluorinated toothpaste after every meal </li></ul><ul><li>Floss daily </li></ul><ul><li>Go to the dentist regularly for check–ups – usually twice a year! </li></ul><ul><li>Cut down on sugar and sweets  </li></ul>
  18. 18. Practice Regular Hand washing <ul><li>Wash you hands after you use the bathroom </li></ul><ul><li>Helps prevent infections such as, pink eye, viruses, impetigo, etc…………. </li></ul>

  20. 20. Take Care of your Skin! <ul><li>Apply lotion to dry skin to prevent cracking </li></ul><ul><li>Keep feet and toes clean and dry to prevent athlete’s foot </li></ul>

  24. 24. Puberty <ul><li>The process of changing from a child into an adult. </li></ul><ul><li>For boys, usually between 11 and 15 </li></ul><ul><li>For girls, usually between 9 and 16 </li></ul>
  25. 25. <ul><li>Each person is unique and goes through puberty at his or her own pace. It happens at a time that is right for him/her. </li></ul><ul><li>Some of you may be going through this change now, while some of you may not change for a few years from now. </li></ul>

  27. 27. <ul><li>Growth-become taller, body parts are becoming larger </li></ul><ul><li>Increase in and darkening of body hair (boys on their face, underarms, arms and legs) girls on their underarms and legs </li></ul><ul><li>Oil secreting glands enlarging and becoming active (acne…a.k.a.…pimples) </li></ul><ul><li>Increase in perspiration…sweating </li></ul><ul><li>Increase in body odor caused from bacteria growing in warm, moist areas, such as your under the arms! </li></ul>
  28. 28. Practice a Healthy Lifestyle… <ul><li>Take good care of your body. It is the only one you will ever have. You can’t abuse it and then go to the store to buy a new one when it is worn out. </li></ul>
  29. 29. <ul><li>Exercise regularly </li></ul><ul><li>Sleep eight or more hours per night </li></ul><ul><li>Eat a well-balanced diet </li></ul><ul><li>NEVER SKIP BREAKFAST </li></ul>
