Cell Cycle

 1. 1. Cell Cycle and Cell Division
 2. 2. Cell Division

- the process a cell undergoes in order to make copies of itself.

Why do cells divide?

 3. 3. DNA & Chromosomes

DNA is chromatin strands and chromosomes

 4. 4. Interphase (about 90% of the cell cycle time)

Cell mature

Chromosomes copy themselves

 5. 5. Mitosis: Prophase

Nuclear membrane disappears

Spindle fibers form at the poles of the cell

 6. 6. Mitosis: Metaphase

Chromosomes line up at the middle

2 Spindle fibers attach to each centromere

 7. 7. Mitosis: Anaphase

Centromeres split and the fiber strands pull the chromosomes to each pole

 8. 8. Mitosis: Telophase

2 new nuclei form at two poles of the cell where chromosomes have gathered

Mitosis (division of one nucleus into two identical nuclei) is complete

 9. 9. Cytokinesis Two new daughter cells are formed
