How To Do Keyword Research - Beginners Guide
1. Have you seen those articles that promote :
“Get On Google Page 1”

Etc……..
If you have a fairly new domain and are not recognized
as an authority website on Google – You need these
tips.
2. Keyword research is by far the most important criteria
for you to consider.
Our ultimate goal is to get traffic, and a properly
researched keyword will be the start of this process.
It is well known among marketing experts that
identifying and optimizing your specific words is a
critical element of your SEO.
3. Without a properly targeted keyword or phrase, your ranking
on the leading search engines will be dismal at best.
Let’s look at a recommended cycle in this image;
Define your target audience or market.
Determine relevant keywords and perform research.
Competitive Analysis.
Repeat steps 2 and 3, if necessary
4. There is a good free tool called Google Adwords.
This application has a very small learning curve and is a good
application to get started.
Google Adwords will be the focus of this slide show.
There are other very options available, such as Wordstream
and Market Samurai, the latter being an application (that I
would term) an advanced keyword tool that performs
outstanding competitive analysis.
Of course, it is not free, and certainly not a starting point for
anyone new to keyword research.
5. Getting Started
You will require a Google account to log into the Google
Adwords tool.
Once you are logged in select the “Tools” menu and
“Keyword Planner” option.
In this next screen we will enter our target keyword/phrase
and a couple of settings
6. The target keyword is entered – “Keyword Research”
Targeting the United States and English.
7. “Only show ideas closely related to my search term”.
This is a recommended setting as it will keep the
keyword results close to the desired keyword.
If your results are limited, then de-select this option. The
quantity of results will dramatically increase.
This can be very useful as the results can (and likely will)
give you many suggestions for better keyword/phrases
that you had not considered.
8. The result shows 2,900 average monthly searches for
“keyword research”. Now, you might very quickly come to the
conclusion to go after these top 2 keywords. The volume is
high and very attractive and can easily get you quite excited.
Don’t fall into this trap, which many do, and here is why;
9. You are in competition with many websites that have had a presence on
the internet for a substantial amount of time.
They will certainly be targeting these high numbers, resulting in little
chance for you to rank high in the page results.
Your competition will have high page ranks and be recognized as an
authority site with Google.
Instead, let’s look at a keyword/phrase where we will have a much better
chance to rank.
Further down the results list are two interesting option; “how to do
keyword research” and “free keyword research”.
One might immediately assume that 110-590 monthly searches on “free
keyword research” may not be worth the effort.
10. Here are some well known statistics that prove this is not the case;
Let’s assume you rank 5th place on page 1 for a specific keyword
with an average monthly search volume of 1,600. Here is the
average click through rate of each position;
1st – 33%
2nd – 17%
3rd – 11%
4th – 8%
5th – 6% etc….
10th – 2% - END OF PAGE 1 RESULTS…
Even at 5th place (ON PAGE 1) your click through rate (on average)
will be 6% of 1,600 or 96 potential clicks, and that is if you make
page 1. Imagine the results for page 2, or page 3.
Simply put, “unless your page has a high ranking with Google, you
will be pretty much invisible”.
11. The good news is, the small guy is not left behind.
You can make your content very visible by going after these
less competitive keywords/phrases, commonly termed “Long
Tail Keywords”.
12. Long Tailed Keywords
It is no coincidence that “How To Do Keyword Research” or
“Free Keyword Research” have fewer monthly searches.
These are considered long to medium tail keywords. A long
tailed keyword may contain more words than what is
presented in this example.
So, how long can a long tailed keyword be?
There is actually a point of diminishing returns which
happens to be around 6 words or 40 characters.
Every phrase will be different and have unique results, but
this would be the average to keep in mind.
13. What is the benefit of Long Tail Keywords?
Example:
Do an Adwords analysis on the keyword, “Get Leads”, the average
monthly searches will be extremely high simply because it is such
a generic term.
Get leads for what? - MLM business, Cameras, Affiliate marketing
etc… These short keywords will almost always get high volumes of
traffic simply because they represent a very broad range of
interest.
A Long Tailed Keyword is more specific and focused. The results
of using these will be to narrow down relevant traffic and
filter out irrelevant traffic.
The following graph really speaks volumes for the relationship
between keyword length, traffic and competition;
14. Long tail keywords = low volume of searches but high
conversion rate.
Short tail keywords = high volume of searches but low
conversion rate.
You decide what type of keyword to go after - Long Tail -
Medium Tail - Short Tail.
15. Experiment with many variations of your phrase to find the best
target keyword phrase.
It may take several variations to arrive a good targeted phrase -
but is time well spent.
Your Keyword research will be a continual process as you cannot
rely on the same keywords for months or even years on end.
People are using longer and more complex search queries to find
information, products and services.
You need to stay updated and continuously experiment and
expand your keyword research.
