I’d like to begin with three short, true stories

Pecha kucha (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pecha_Kucha) is a style of presenting a powerpoint presentation. Each participant may have a maximum of twenty slides to be displayed for a maximum of 20 seconds each. The slideshows are set on the timer. The presenters get up, give their presentations, and sit down!

Try this with your students. It does a great job in training them on their presentation skills.

So, what’s to stop you from using all this cool stuff?

Bandwidth! Start NOW to lobby for more.

The new web, AND the new NETS-S standards (http://www.iste.org) are all about collaboration, and learning networks, and SO MUCH MORE than just Office. If we stop at those things; if we stop raising the bar at PowerPoint; then just look at all that they will have missed. They will be released to the world with NO information management skills, and no skills as a team player in a collaborative project, and SO much more.

And the teachers in public and private schools alike need the professional development to learn how to stay connected. Teaching a tool won’t work any longer; the tools are changing daily.

While this presentation will show a number of very cool tools, the goal is NOT the tools themselves. The goal is to show how the new web changes how we do things in the classroom.

It’s about a change in our outlook on the web. A new state of mind. An understanding that there now exists the tools that make global collaboration and personal expression very easy.

Blogs is NOT a four letter word! They are POWERFUL tools to help students learn to write better, communicate better, and LEARN! Some teachers are sole authors. Others allow their students as Contributing Authors. Still others give each student a blog. Don’t be afraid of them! USE THEM!

Go here for more blogs to see: http://gatesworkshop.wikispaces.com/Blogs

Set some rules, like no last names, no discussing private information, no bullying, etc, but LET THEM WRITE!!! Think about THIS video: http://plethoratech.blogspot.com/2007/04/42.html

    http://www.coveritlive.com

Free. It provides the code to put into your blog, wiki, or web page to make live blogging VERY EASY to do. Invite parents to join a live blog - right from their office or home computer. You’ll LOVE the results.

Live blogging occurs when people use their blogs to post live comments or chats. Go here to see an example: http://tipline.blogspot.com/2008/02/coveritlive-blogging-session.html

Blogs are easy to set up, cost nothing, and can be monitored by the teacher. Comments are moderated, too.

Don’t just blog once or twice and stop. Keep it going all year. Make blogging FUN. Consider not grading them. Let the kids use them to journal about what they’re learning. Try live blogging. Share good blog posts with the class. Your students will BLOOM when they realize that they are writing to a global audience.

wiki-wiki means Quick in Hawaiian. It is a type of web page that allows others to edit and contribute to the page. In the Horizon Project wiki, thirteen classrooms from around the world are building a site based upon the Horizon Report. Don’t know what that is? THESE kids do. Find out for yourself here: http://www.nmc.org/pdf/2008-Horizon-Report.pdf

    Free wiki sites:
    wikispaces.com - http://www.wikispaces.com/site/for/teachers100K
    pbwiki.com - http://pbwiki.com/education.wiki
    wetpaint.com - http://www.wetpaint.com/

Make sure that you look around for how to sign up as a teacher so you don’t get ads on your wikis.

Google Docs contains three applications. A word processor, a spreadsheet, and a presentation tool. Up to 10 people may edit a document at one time allowing for great collaboration to take place. Files may be saved to your computer in multiple formats. AND, you can see who contributed what to the document. Only those who were invited may see or edit the document.

The google spreadsheet now allows the users to submit data to the form via a web page. VERY cool way to collect data, give short quizzes, take surveys, and more. The spreadsheet also allows Conditional Formatting, which makes for automatic “correcting” of the results.

Get the google apps for YOUR school today! They’re FREE. Info here: http://www.google.com/a

Another free app that is EXCELLENT is Zoho.com. Check that out! TONS of tools.
