  • Netvibes.com - RSS aggregator. Very easy to use. Can share tabs or widgets. Students can make these easily, as well.\nAlso, Pageflakes.com and reader.google.com. Make tabs public, or just share widgets. But, let the STUDENTS make these!\n
  • Another free forum site is Lefora.com Edmodo.com is excellent! Looks a LOT like Facebook, which is another bonus.\n
  • I like how you can split off a post to start its own thread.\n

  • I saw a class that would print out their search results pages and highlight the important parts of the page, punch three holes in it, and put them in binders. TOTALLY inadequate.\n

  • Only the people in the Diigo Group “Diigo in Education” can see these sticky notes. Teachers can highlight some text and put sticky notes on the page and students can reply. Now we’re able to discuss the content of web pages.\n
  • VERY easy to bookmark and share with your class.\n
  • You can choose to receive daily emails with the sites that the classes have bookmarked. VERY handy to stay in touch with the class’s activity.\n
  • In Diigo, go to the groups page and search by tag. Easy way to find the sites that the students have been sharing.\n
  • How do YOUR students manage a project when they’re told to build something together?\n
  • Wikis - not new. Just don’t forget them. Also, the Discussion forums are another option\n
  • wiki-wiki means Quick in Hawaiian. It is a type of web page that allows others to edit and contribute to the page. In the Horizon Project wiki, thirteen classrooms from around the world are building a site based upon the Horizon Report. Don’t know what that is? THESE kids do. Find out for yourself here: http://www.nmc.org/pdf/2008-Horizon-Report.pdf\n\n

  • Not everyone sees the world the same way.\n
  • This is a screencast of twitter in action on the days following the earthquake in Japan. Twitter is an excellent way to follow current events AND to communicate with students.\n
  • Google Docs contains three applications. A word processor, a spreadsheet, and a presentation tool. Up to 10 people may edit a document at one time allowing for great collaboration to take place. Files may be saved to your computer in multiple formats. AND, you can see who contributed what to the document. Only those who were invited may see or edit the document.\n
  • The google spreadsheet now allows the users to submit data to the form via a web page. VERY cool way to collect data, give short quizzes, take surveys, and more. The spreadsheet also allows Conditional Formatting, which makes for automatic “correcting” of the results.\n

  • Documents can be shared between students. Share entire folders with the students that contain their handouts, etc.\n
  • http://windowslive.com - also free\n
  • It’s MUCH MUCH more than just seeing your old house. It’s LIVE data, historical data, tours, and more.\n

  • Make GE tours easily. http://earth.google.com/outreach/tutorial_kmltours.html\n
  • When in Google Earth, click the icon in the toolbar to open that location in Google Maps. Then switch to Street View\n
  • The kmlfactbook.org shows data plotted on a Google Earth\n
  • SURELY there has GOT to be something better than powerpoint!\n

  • Pecha kucha (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pecha_Kucha) is a style of presenting a powerpoint presentation. Each participant may have a maximum of twenty slides to be displayed for a maximum of 20 seconds each. The slideshows are set on the timer. Turns students from being screen readers to story tellers instantly.\n\nNo web site needed. It’s just a style\n

  • Ignite is a very similar style. It’s supposed to be funny, but for our purposes we’re going to think of it as a modified pecha-Kucha presentation. Instead of each slide being shown for 20 seconds, in this style they’re shown for just 15 seconds. I suggest this style for kids. It’s tough to talk for twenty seconds on some slides\n
  • Use this timing with students.\n
