Introduction <ul><li>Township has two mosquito control programs: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Nuisance mosquito control </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Primary breeding ground is along Fraser River Foreshore </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>West Nile Virus control </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Primary breeding ground is catch basins and stagnant surface water sites </li></ul></ul></ul>

Introduction <ul><li>Nuisance mosquito control is a requirement under Metro Vancouver’s bylaw </li></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Four municipalities, including Township, hire a nuisance mosquito contractor </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Culex Environmental serves the four municipalities </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><li>West Nile Virus control is under the direction of Fraser Health Authority </li></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Township has retained Morrow Bioscience Ltd. </li></ul></ul></ul>

Background <ul><li>Nuisance mosquito control has been done for a number of years </li></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Level of nuisance largely dependent on freshet </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>2007 was a particularly bad year, due to prolonged freshet </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><li>West Nile Virus control began in 2004 </li></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>WNV Has since spread across the US and the rest of Canada </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>In 2007, 18 cases found in BC – all travel related </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Largely dependent on rainfall </li></ul></ul></ul>

Nuisance Mosquito Control For 2008 <ul><ul><li>2008 Fraser River freshet forecasted to be average </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Annual program focuses on weekly surveillance and treatment </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Treatment using Bti, a naturally occurring soil bacterium </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>New for 2008: </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Fraser foreshore mosquito habitat map update </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Mosquito magnets </li></ul></ul></ul>

West Nile Virus Control For 2008 <ul><li>Communication and public awareness </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Newspaper ads, posters, and info packages </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Public information sessions and community events </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Mosquito Information Session – Fort Langley Community Hall </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><li>Surveillance </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Catch basin monitoring by ToL (contractor) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Mosquito traps monitored by FHA </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Dead corvid collection by FHA </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Mosquito management </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Larval treatment as per FHA direction </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Treatment using approved larvicide </li></ul></ul>

Township State of Readiness <ul><li>Treatment permits are in place </li></ul><ul><li>West Nile Virus Response Plan updated for 2008 </li></ul><ul><li>Extensive mapping information is available and will be expanded/updated in 2008 </li></ul><ul><li>Expecting Ministry if Health (UBCM) funding of ~$96,000 for the 2008 WNv Program </li></ul>

What if WNv Arrives? <ul><li>Township would participate in an Adult Mosquito Control Local Advisory Committee (LAC) established by Fraser Health </li></ul><ul><li>Current members are Councilor Vickberg, Councilor Ward (alternate), General Manager of Engineering, and Manager of Water Resources and Environment </li></ul><ul><li>Metro Vancouver has developed a regional communication strategy </li></ul>
