  • As you know, TOL became an Active Community in May 2006, up until now, there has been little to report on our progress in developing a plan of action to meet the 20% increase in physical activity that is expected of an Active Community – but today, we are here to inform you that there is a great deal going on in this regard.

    • BACKGROUND
    • In May 2006, the Township of Langley became an official Active Community
    • What is Active Communities?
      • A cross-sectoral initiative focused on supporting communities to increase physical activity levels
      • of British Columbians by 20% by 2010.
      • Part of ActNow BC larger platform
  • 3.
    • In spring 2007, the Township applied for and was awarded a $5,000 grant for the purpose of developing a local Active Communities Plan
    • The grant described the desire to achieve 4 objectives:
      • Research
      • Build the brand “Go Active Langley” (GoA.L.)
      • Develop a long term plan
      • Hold a community based launch event
  • 4.
    • In December 2007, the Township applied for and was successful in receiving a grant for $35,000 from UBCM to assist with the Go Active Langley launch event and to implement some of the expected recommendations of the Active Communities plan

    • GO ACTIVE LANGLEY GOALS
    • Promote healthy lifestyles
    • Build a healthy community by increasing awareness of the benefits of regular physical activity
    • Increase physical activity levels amongst Township of Langley residents by creating new opportunities for participation in recreation, sport and physical activity
    • Strengthen community partners to enhance resident access to information about active lifestyles

    • Community partner collaboration
    • Active Communities resource review
    • Data analysis
    • Compilation of report

    • Final revisions submitted to Implementation Committee
