  • 7. The Pharisees appearedapproximately 150 BC.
  • 8. Mark 2:14-3:6 The Phariseesare mentioned four times in our text for today. . .
  • 9. Mark 2:13-14He went out again beside the sea, and allthe crowd was coming to him, and he wasteaching them. And as he passed by, hesaw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting atthe tax booth, and he said to him,“Follow me.”And he rose and followedhim.
  • 10. Mark 2:15-16And as he reclined at table in his house,many tax collectors and sinners werereclining with Jesus and his disciples, forthere were many who followed him. Andthe scribes of the Pharisees, when theysaw that he was eating with sinners andtax collectors, said to his disciples, “Whydoes he eat with tax collectors andsinners?”
  • 11. Mark 2:17And when Jesus heard it, he said to them,“Those who are well have no need of aphysician, but those who are sick. Icame not to call the righteous, butsinners.”
  • 12. Pharisees’ misconception #1To be “holy” you need to avoid thosewho are “unholy!”
  • 13. Pharisees’ misconception #2To be “holy,” certain rituals have tobe done religiously! - Fasting - Sabbath
  • 14. Ritual of fastingMark 2:18Now Johns disciples and the Phariseeswere fasting. And people came and saidto him, “Why do Johns disciples and thedisciples of the Pharisees fast, but yourdisciples do not fast?”
  • 15. In their zeal the Pharisees “raised the bar” and fasted two times EVERY week!Luke 18:12I fast twice a week . . .
  • 16. Ritual of fastingMark 2:18Now Johns disciples and the Phariseeswere fasting. And people came and saidto him, “Why do Johns disciples and thedisciples of the Pharisees fast, but yourdisciples do not fast?”
  • 17. Ritual of fastingMark 2:19-20And Jesus said to them, “Can the weddingguests fast while the bridegroom is withthem? As long as they have thebridegroom with them, they cannot fast.The days will come when the bridegroomis taken away from them, and then theywill fast in that day.”
  • 18. Ritual of fastingMark 2:21No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth onan old garment. If he does, the patchtears away from it, the new from the old,and a worse tear is made.
  • 19. Ritual of fastingMark 2:22And no one puts new wine into oldwineskins. If he does, the wine will burstthe skins—and the wine is destroyed, andso are the skins. But new wine is for freshwineskins.”
  • 20. Ritual of fasting Jesus is saying to the Pharisees:“I have come not to simply give some additional insights to your ‘religion,’ but rather I come with something radically new!” “the new covenant in my blood” (Luke 2:20)

Ritual of fastingIn their zeal to protect the truth given by God in the Scriptures, the Pharisees hadheaped so much of their own man-made tradition upon the Scripture, that it got lost under the pile! The rituals they performed religiouslyhad blinded them to the true path toward a living relationship with God!

  • 23. Ritual of SabbathMark 2:23-24One Sabbath he was going through thegrain fields, and as they made their way,his disciples began to pluck heads ofgrain. And the Pharisees were saying tohim, “Look, why are they doing what isnot lawful on the Sabbath?”
  • 24. Ritual of SabbathMark 2:25-26And he said to them, “Have you neverread what David did, when he was in needand was hungry, he and those who werewith him: how he entered the house ofGod . . . and ate the bread of the Presence,which it is not lawful for any but the prieststo eat, and also gave it to those who werewith him?”
  • 25. Ritual of SabbathMark 2:27-28And he said to them, “The Sabbath wasmade for man, not man for theSabbath. So the Son of Man is lord evenof the Sabbath.”
  • 26. Ritual of Sabbath Bottom line: Jesus declares HIS authority over the Sabbath . . . And then proceeds to display that authority!
  • 27. Ritual of SabbathMark 3:1-3Again he entered the synagogue, and aman was there with a witheredhand. And they watched Jesus, to seewhether he would heal him on theSabbath, so that they might accusehim. And he said to the man with thewithered hand, “Come here.”
  • 28. Ritual of SabbathMark 3:4-5And he said to them, “Is it lawful on theSabbath to do good or to do harm, tosave life or to kill?” But they weresilent. And he looked around at themwith anger, grieved at their hardness ofheart, and said to the man, “Stretch outyour hand.” He stretched it out, and hishand was restored.
