What is surface area? <ul><li>Surface area is literally the area of all of the surfaces of a three dimensional object. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>When you wrap a present, the amount of wrapping paper you use is the surface area of the present. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>When you paint the walls in your house, the area you cover with paint is the surface area of the wall. </li></ul></ul>http://www.karikakultur.com/painting/paint-roller-tips-tricks.htm

One way to find surface area… <ul><li>Since surface area is finding the area of each surface, that is what we are going to do! </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Area of surface 1: </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>A = 5 x 2 = 10 ft 2 </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Area of surface 2: </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>A = 5 x 2 = 10 ft 2 </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Area of surface 3: </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>A = 4 x 2 = 8 ft 2 </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Area of surface 4: </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>A = 4 x 2 = 8 ft 2 </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Area of surface 5: </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>A = 5 x 4 = 20 ft 2 </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Area of surface 6: </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>A = 5 x 4 = 20 ft 2 </li></ul></ul></ul>4 ft 5 ft 2 ft 2 ft 5 ft 4 ft 2 ft 5 ft 4 ft Now just add all of the areas together to get the TOTAL surface area. Total Surface Area = 76 ft 2

Triangular Prism <ul><li>Let’s do the same process but with a triangular prism. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Area of surface 1: </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>A = (3 x 4) ÷ 2 = 6 ft 2 </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Area of surface 2: </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>A = (3 x 4) ÷ 2 = 6 ft 2 </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Area of surface 3: </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>A = 10 x 5 = 50 ft 2 </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Area of surface 4: </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>A = 10 x 4 = 40ft 2 </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Area of surface 5: </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>A = 10 x 3 = 30ft 2 </li></ul></ul></ul>Animated Triangular Prism 3 ft 4 ft 5 ft 10 ft Now just add all of the areas together to get the TOTAL surface area. Total Surface Area = 132 ft 2 3 ft 4 ft 10 ft

Surface Area Formula <ul><li>The shapes off to the sides are your bases. </li></ul><ul><li>Notice that the rest of the rectangles form one large rectangle! </li></ul><ul><li>In order to find the surface area you need to find the area of the 2 bases, and the area of the big rectangle in the middle. </li></ul>Animated Steps Animated Figure
