    • Lesson Aims:
    • To describe the key features of the NZ political system.
    • To explain the various roles of government.
    • To discuss the relevance and value of MMP.
    • Do now:
    • Write a structured paragraph explaining whether you think the arguments against women’s rights were convincing or not. (use the next slide)

  • Revision: Discrimination
    • Women should not be given the vote because:
    • Men and women have “separate spheres” of influence.
    • Most women do not want the vote.
    • Women are represented by their husbands.
    • Women do not fight in wars and so have not earned the vote.
    • The system works – why change it?
    • Women do not understand politics.
    • Women should be given the vote because:
    • The vote would help women to get rid of other inequalities.
    • Women would want more moral laws than men.
    • Women are capable of understanding politics.
    • Other countries are giving women the vote.
    • Then vote is a democratic right.
    • Women pay taxes and so should have a say in what happened to that money.
    • Some uneducated working men could vote but well-educated “respectable” women could not.

  • Women in Parliament
    • Graph the following information on a composite bar-graph:

  • Women in Parliament
    • Using the composite bar-graph you have just created:
    • How successful do you think the Suffrage Movement was initially? Explain your answer.
    • Explain why you think that there aren’t an even amount of men and women in parliament even now.
  • Key Terms
    • Copy the following into your glossary:
    • MMP: literally means ‘ Mixed member proportional representation’. This means that the amount of seats a party gets reflects the amount of support they received in the election.
    • Prime Minister: The leader of a democratic nation.
    • Portfolio: An area of political management such as finance or tourism.
    • Cabinet: A body of high-ranking members of the government.
  • Political Systems: First-past-the-post
    • New Zealand election system used to be first-past-the-post . This meant that the party which gained the most votes run the country by themselves.
    Ignore that the video is from Columbia. What similarities are there with how our government is elected?? What is good about this system? What issues are there with this system?
  • Political Systems: MMP
    • The first election using MMP was held in 1996.
    • MMP is a system where you have two votes:
    • 1. Candidate vote
    • With your candidate vote you show support for a local MP. If they gain the support of your local area then they end up in parliament.
    • 2. Party vote
    • The party vote contributes to the remaining seats in parliament. The higher the support a party gets the more seats they get in parliament.
  • Variety Within Government
    • When discussing governments people talk about left wing and right wing.
    Left wing is socialist (high tax and high rate of public service). Right wing is conservative (low tax and user pays) Question: Can you think of any other left or right wing parties?
  • Prime Minister’s Role
    • Our prime minister is the most senior minister in our government. He can select and can dismiss other members of the cabinet, and gives portfolios and other responsibilities to other politicians.
    • He can also hold portfolios himself. John Key is in charge of tourism. His task as Prime Minister, however, means that he has oversight over all the portfolios.
    • Question:
    • What is the Prime Minister’s role? Make your point in your own words.
