  • 1. Nouns Objectives:  To identify types of nouns  To use nouns correctly in a sentence.
  • 2. Definition:  A noun is a word that names a person, place, thing, or an idea  Categories:  Concrete - names an object that occupies space or can be perceived with the senses  Abstract - names an idea, quality, or a characteristic
  • 3. Examples:  Concrete  Stone  Thunder  Shout  Air  Salt  Space  Light  Shade  Abstract  Sadness  Hope  Anger  Charity  Kindness  Happiness  Love  Patience
  • 4. Singular & Plural  A singular noun names one person, place, thing, or idea  Mask  Briefcase  Shoe  Dog  A plural noun names more than one  Masks  Briefcases  Shoes  Dogs
  • 5. Possession:  Possessive forms are used to show possession, ownership, or the relationship between two nouns.  the dog’s bowl  the school’s mascot  the coach’s whistle
  • 6. Common and Proper Nouns:  Common nouns are general  day  city  street  team  Proper nouns are specific  Monday  Atlanta  Fairview Avenue  Atlanta Braves (Note: proper nouns must be capitalized.)
  • 7. Collective:  Collective nouns name a group  Cow - herd  Player - team  Singer - choir  Worker - crew  Collective nouns may be either singular or plural  herds  teams
