1. 1. Glaak Attack Jessica Goolsby Educ 373
 2. 2. Science Standard 3 – The Physical Setting

6.3.18

Investigate and describe that when a new material, such as concrete, is made by combining two or more materials, it has properties that are different from the original materials

Taken from: http://dc.doe.in.gov/Standards/AcademicStandards/StandardSearch.aspx

Link to activity: http://www.indianastandardsresources.org/files/sci/sci_6_3_18.pdf

 3. 3. Definitions

Materials - the substance or substances of which a thing is made or composed

Properties - an essential or distinctive attribute or quality of a thing: the chemical and physical properties of an element.

Taken from www.dictionary.com

 4. 4. Materials

125 ml liquid laundry starch

62.5 ml white all-purpose glue

2.5 ml salt

Science journals

Waste container

 5. 5. Discussion

Create a list of different materials that you can think of that can be made by combining two or more materials.

Think about materials that don’t have the same properties.

Describe the properties of each ingredient and the final material.

 6. 6. Glaak

Today you will be making a new substance called Glaak. You will make it by combining materials that will result in a new material. This is what it should look like in the end.

 7. 7. How do they look?

Looking at all of the ingredients in front of you describe their properties. Write your answers in your science journal. Salt, Starch, and Glue.

Draw a picture detailing what they each look like.

 8. 8. How to make it

Ingredients:

125 ml liquid laundry starch

62.5 ml white all-purpose glue

2.5 ml salt

Combine the starch with the salt and stir until the salt is dissolved. Next, add the glue and stir until a lump of Glaak forms.

 9. 9. Questions

Answer the following questions in your science journal.

What has happened to the properties of each ingredient?

Does the Glaak have the same properties of the original ingredients?

How would you describe the Glaak?

Why did the properties of the ingredients change?

Now you can play with your Glaak!

 10. 10.
