  2. 2. Rise of Patriotism vs Loyalism 1776    Families were forced to choose sides. Patriots organized militia units, recruited volunteers. Large amount of Patriot strongholds, small amount of Loyalist strongholds.
  3. 3. Trenton 1776    Washington's army crossed Deleware river to Trenton. They caught Hessian forces off guard, and left with victory. They had another victory in Princeton.
  4. 4. Saratoga 1777      General Howe decided to come on boats to Philidelphia, rather that marching across New Jersey. Deafeated Burgoyne's army at Saratoga. British raided Bennington, Vermont. Beaten back by 2,000 militiamen Burgoyne was forced to surrender.
  5. 5. Valley Forge 1777    Continental army was underequipped and dying in the winter. There was general disorder due to differing tactics and caused them to be weaker. Congress began to monetarily support the army after seeing their state. Baron von Steuben helped to unify their fighting and tactics to strengthen and proffesionalize them.
  6. 6. Allies and Stances    1777- Patriots allied with France for money, supplies, and troops. France supported them because they were mutual enemies of Britain. 1778- Most Britons were against the war at this point. 1779- Spain joined the war against Britain to gain back Florida and Gibraltar, also were enemies of Britain.
  7. 7. British Southern Strategy     British pursued the Southern Colonies. Captured Savannah, GA; defeated Charleston and Camden, SC. General Nathanael Greene took over as Continental army commander. Began war of attrition, which weakened the British army strategically.
  8. 8. Guerilla Warfare Guerilla Warfare includes tactics that ambush and use the element of surprise against the enemy. These tactics were used by the Patriots in the Battles of Lexington and Concord. Being able to use these and other unsusual tactics, proposed by George Washington, the Patriots were able to gain an upper hand.
  9. 9. Yorktown 1781     British army retreated to the East Coast. British army under General Cornwallis, George Washington's army, and the French Navy were all heading to Yorktown. American and French troops outnumbered British Army. Cornwallis surrendered, ending the war.
