2. 2. Defined
Multimedia - the combined use of several media, as sound and full-motion video in computer applications. (
3. 3. Technology Study
The U.S. Department of Education states that all students be technologically literate by the 8th grade.
In 2000 a study by Software and Information Industry Association reviewed 311 research studies on the effectiveness of technology on student achievement
Findings
“Revealed positive and consistent patterns when students were engaged in technology rich environments, including significant gains, and achievement in all subject areas. Increased achievement in pre-k to high school in regular and special needs students, and improved attitudes toward learning and increased self esteem.” (
4. 4. Research
16th percentile point general increase by using a whiteboard.
26th percentile point increase by using graphics and visuals.
26th percentile point achievement from using voting systems.
31st percentile point gain by using INTERACTIVE WHITEBOARDS reinforcers.
5. 5. In 2009, the Marzano Research Laboratory conducted a study that involved 85 teachers and 170 classrooms. They found that three features included in the use of interactive whiteboards had a significant relationship with student achievement. (Marzano 2009).
This study also emphasized that this powerful tool, the interactive whiteboard, must be used with good classroom practice. We cannot assume that just by turning it on, student achievement will happen.
Research Continued
6. 6. Impact on the Student
Learners become teachers with the use of technology and teachers become true advisers and mentors to student learning.
“Sharing knowledge and the management of knowledge becomes a necessary skill for the modern day teacher and learner.” (
7. 7. Student Empowerment
Technology empowers students as the teacher and learner because they are actively involved in the learning process.
Intriguing
Motivating
Allows creativity
8. 8. Multimedia Universe
Just as the planets revolve around the sun, teachers and students should revolve around technology.
We as educators need to embrace technology and use the tools that students know and excited them to learn.
9. 9. Tools in the Multimedia Universe
Presentation- PowerPoint, Movie Maker, Story Maker, Claymation, Glogster, Musuem Box, ReadWriteThink, etc.
Maps and Brainstorming- Inspiration, Google Earth,,
Collaboration Tools –CoSketch, Cacoo, Google Docs, Blogs, Wiki’s,etc.
Timelines- Xtimeline, Time Glider, Timetoast
Visualized Text- Wordle, Tagxedo, New York Times Visualization Lab
10. 10. Incorporating With Curriculum
Multimedia can be incorporated with any curriculum map.
