      • Demonstrate a general understanding of notebook side tabs.
      • And, Navigate, use and create Notebook Gallery Collections.
    • SMART Notebook is Smart’s interactive whiteboard software.
    • Notebook software is similar to a paper notebook. You can use it to immediately capture notes and drawings.
    • It has an advantage over a paper notebook because images and Macromedia flash file can be easily inserted in to a notebook file.
    • You can use it in the classroom to create engaging and interactive lesson activities.
    • To launch Notebook software, double-click the SMART Notebook icon on the desktop.
    • You could also launch the software clicking on the start menu, then all programs, then SMART Board Software, and then Notebook Software.
    • When you open notebook the first time you will see a Welcome notebook screen.
    • This screen can be turned off by un-checking the box in the bottom left hand corner.
    • When you click New Notebook File, a new file will open.
    • Each new SMART Notebook file contains a work area that can be filled with objects.
    • The work area is similar to a paper notebook.
    • You can use it to
      • capture notes and drawings and
      • insert images and flash files
      • You can also add as many pages as you need to capture or display information.
    • The menu bar in SMART Notebook is similar to the SMART Notebook software toolbar.
    • They both provide access to many of the same features:
      • File
      • Edit
      • View
      • Insert
      • Format
      • Draw and
      • Help
    • The SMART notebook software toolbar provides access to many tools to help you work with your notebook file.
    • The toolbar always appears at the top of the notebook page but it can be moved.
    • To do this, click the double-ended, vertical arrow on the far right of the toolbar.
    • Other toolbar buttons offer more options for creating Smart notebook objects.
      • Pen tool
      • Line tool
      • Shape tool
      • Creative pen tool
      • Text tool
      • Eraser tool
    • There are four tabs on the side of the notebook interface.
    • They are located on the right hand side of the work area but can be moved to the left hand side.
    • To do this you click the double ended horizontal arrow.
    • You can also hide the side tabs from view when you have finished working with them by selecting the auto-hide check box.
    • Each side tab plays a special role in how you create your presentation.
    • Let’s look at the page sorter tab first.
    • Click the Page sorter tab to see thumbnail images of all the pages in the SMART notebook file.
    • You can add blank pages to the file 3 different ways
      • Use the insert drop down menu
      • Use the Notebook toolbar button or
      • Use The button on the side tab
    • Write numbers on each new page
    • You can navigate through the pages by
      • using the arrow buttons on the notebook toolbar
      • clicking a page in the page sorter tab
      • or using the page back/ ahead icons in the page sorter
    • The active page is indicated by a second border around the thumbnail that contains a drop down menu.
    • To change the page order, drag and drop the thumbnail of the page to its new location.
    • When you change the order, the numbers change automatically.
    • Clicking the drop down menu on the active page presents you with 8 options.
      • Delete page
      • Clear page
      • Insert blank page
      • Clone page
      • Rename page
      • Screen shade
    • You can also resize the page sorter tab by clicking and dragging the double ended arrow.
    • When the auto hide feature is activated the page sorter goes out of view when you click inside the work area.
    • This makes the viewable work area larger.
    • The auto hide box must be checked to enable this feature.
    • If the auto hide box is left unchecked the page sorter will remain in view.
    • Let’s review some key points.
    • There are three ways to create pages
      • Use the insert drop down menu
      • Use the Notebook toolbar button or
      • Use The button on the side tab
    • There are 3 ways to navigate pages
      • using the arrow buttons on the notebook toolbar
      • clicking a page in the page sorter tab
      • or using the page back/ ahead icons in the page sorter
    • You can modify the active page using the options in the drop down menu.
    • Here are some examples of
      • Writing
      • Text
      • Pictures
      • Shapes and Lines
      • All of these items are objects
    • The Notebook software gallery is a collection of resources filled with many different types of objects.
    • You can increase the visible gallery area by using the resize handle.
    • You can also launch the onscreen keyboard by clicking the icon to the left of the search field.
    • The gallery contains thousands of
      • images
      • pages
      • videos
      • flash files
      • and SMART Notebook files.
    • You can use these objects to give visual context to your presentations.
    • Everything in the gallery is organized into searchable collections.
    • There are two ways to find content in the gallery.
    • There is a search field at the top that allows you to search by using keywords, like you would if you were using an internet search engine.
      • Click inside the search field
      • Type a keyword (animals)
      • Click the search button to display your results.
      • Select the thumbnail you want to use and drag it in to the work area.
    • Another way to search the gallery is to browse the collections by selecting a folder.
    • Geography
    • The gallery also contains pages.
    • You can recognize a page in the gallery by the folded top-right corner.
    • Pages in the gallery are not like other objects.
    • To insert a page, drag the thumbnail from the gallery to the work area.
    • This will create a page with a background that cannot be moved.
    • You cannot select or unlock the page background image.
    • The only way to remove a page or background is to delete the page.
    • If you press the page sorter tab you will notice that the new page was inserted directly after the last active notebook page.
    • Objects can be moved from page to page by dragging and dropping to any other page in the sorter.
    • Let’s return to the gallery and take a closer look at the different headings.
    • One of the headings in the Gallery’s display area is interactive and Multimedia.
    • This area contains
      • Flash video files
      • Flash created objects and
      • Objects with attached audio
    • Items from this folder are used to add rich media content to a lesson.
    • Flash files have the flash icon on the top left corner of the thumbnail image.
    • Video files have a filmstrip border around the thumbnail image.
    • Sound files have a speaker icon in the bottom left corner of the thumbnail image.
    • To insert a flash, video, or sound file, drag the thumbnail from the gallery into the work area.
    • After you insert a flash file just follow the on screen instructions to interact with it.
    • To display a video use the toolbar buttons to play, pause, stop and so on.
    • You can add sound to an object by
      • Inserting an object into the work area
      • Select the object
      • Use the drop down object menu and select sound
      • Browse to find a sound file and select it.
      • Click ok in the dialog box.
      • Click the icon in the corner to play the sound.
    • The My Content Area is a special gallery collection reserved specifically for objects you have imported.
    • It is a good place to store objects that you will use in multiple presentations.
    • You can add an item to the my content area by dragging it from the work area to the my content area.
    • You can also add to the my content folder by clicking the icon to the right of the search button.
    • Choose one of the options from the menu.
    • Once we have created folders in My Content, we can share these folders with others by exporting them as collection files.
    • Select a folder in the gallery
    • Select the drop down area
    • Select export as collection file to launch the save as dialog box.
    • Send your file to a colleague and when he or she double clicks the collection file it will be added to his or her gallery.
    • Online Essential for Educators accesses a list of internet links that allow you to search for lesson activities, curriculum standards, classroom resources, or additional gallery content.
    • Instead of interrupting the flow of your presentation by leaving notebook software, you can seamlessly launch a web page with supporting content while delivering your material.
    • You must have an active internet connection and web browser to use the online resources.
    • Use the attachments tab to attach files, shortcuts to files and links to websites and open them easily during your presentations.
    • The attachments tab gives you easy access to the information you want to display.
    • There are different types of attachments.
    • I already have some added to the presentation.
