What is high fructose corn syrup (HFCS)? <ul><li>It is a manmade sweetener that is found in a wide range of processed foods. </li></ul><ul><li>It is made by processing corn syrup to increase the levels of fructose. </li></ul><ul><li>Mostly found in soda and baked goods. </li></ul><ul><li>Has been around since the 1970’s </li></ul>

  4. 4. HFCS Myths <ul><li>High fructose corn syrup is not natural. </li></ul><ul><li>High fructose corn syrup is sweeter than sugar. </li></ul><ul><li>HFCS is to blame for obesity and causes diabetes. </li></ul><ul><li>High fructose corn syrup, fructose and corn syrup are the same. </li></ul>
  5. 5. Reality to those Myths <ul><li>HFCS is made from corn which is a natural grain product. It contains no artificial or synthetic ingredients. </li></ul><ul><li>High fructose corn syrup and sugar have virtually the same sweetness. It was made to provide the same sweetness as sugar so that we wouldn’t know the difference. </li></ul><ul><li>There is no scientific evidence to suggest that HFCS is responsible for people becoming obese. </li></ul><ul><li>HFCS and corn syrup are different products with different functions. </li></ul>

  7. 7. Health Concerns <ul><li>Like anything else there are always health concerns that come along with it. There is debate whether or not it is the reason for the increase in obesity but there is no scientific research that has proved this to be true. Just like anything else we eat we must eat products with high fructose corn syrup in moderation. </li></ul>
  8. 8. Two types of HFCS: <ul><li>HFCS-55 (which is the main form in soft drinks) contains 55% fructose and 45% glucose. </li></ul><ul><li>HFCS-42 (Which is the main form in ice cream, desserts and baked goods) contains 42% fructose and 58% glucose. </li></ul>

  11. 11. 5 Health Dangers of HFCS <ul><li>Significant risk of weight gain and obesity. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Studies show it causes increased weight gain over other forms of sweetener. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Increased risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Consumption of HFCS can lead to increase of diabetes. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Can easily be avoided by lesser use of pop, energy drinks and junk food. </li></ul></ul>

Why do we use HFCS? <ul><li>It retains moisture, resists drying out, and blends easily with sweeteners. </li></ul><ul><li>It makes sugar drinks taste better. </li></ul><ul><li>Cheaper than sugar. </li></ul><ul><li>Baked goods end up being softer tan those just made with sugar. </li></ul><ul><li>It is even used in health products like protein bars. </li></ul>
