What is power factor

 1. 1. WHAT IS POWER FACTOR
2. 2. KW
Working Power ( actual power, active power or real power)
It is the power that actually powers the equipment and performs useful work
3. 3. KVAR
Reactive Power
It is the power that magnetic equipment ( transformer, motor and relay) needs to produce the magnetizing flux
4. 4. KVA
Apparent Power
It is the vectorial summation of KVAR and KW
5. 5.
 6. 6. POWER FACTOR
PF = KW / KVA
PF = KW / KW + KVAR
7. 7.
 8. 8. KVA
KVAR
θ
9. 9. PF = KW / KVA = COS θ
KVAR/KVA = SIN θ
KVA = √ KW2 + KVAR 2
10. 10. WHAT CAUSES LOW POWER FACTOR
Since power factor is defined as the ratio of KW to KVA
What causes a large KVAR in a system?
INDUCTIVE LOADS
Transformers
Induction motors
Induction generator
High intensity discharge lighting
