It is not too late to get thisstraightened out: Here we see a church whose members arerespected, rich, envied by many, and thinktheir frustration will disappear when theyaccumulate a little more power and money.They have no idea their emotional distresscomes because their spirit desperately seeksGod.
  • 14. It is not too late to get thisstraightened out:All external measures tell them they are doingwell, but rather than gratitude to God, theyassume just a little more and life will beperfect. Jesus reveals reality! They are indesperate condition! And, unless they needfellowship with Jesus to squelch theiremptiness rather than more worldly goods,they will miss God’s blessings.
  • 15. It is not too late to get thisstraightened out:By turning to Christ, inviting him into theirheart and establishing that fellowship they canreceive a new desire to follow the Lord’sleadership, listen to the Holy Spirit rather thanthe world, then the Lord will bless thembeyond measure.
  • 16. Questions for discussion: How did this story impact you? Did it giveyou a hunger to know God in this way? Or didit just raise more questions for you? What if God spoke to you the way that Hespoke to Corey, would you go and do what theLord said to do if He spoke to you?
  • 17. Questions for discussion: Is repentance a regular part of your life, or doyou find yourself resisting the thought ofrepenting before God? Is the idea that your situation is desperate andthat you need God more than you can possiblycomprehend offensive, challenging, or arelief?
  • 18. Heart barriers that this passageaddresses: How could God ever speak to me the way thathe spoke to Corey? When people talk about repentance it soundsjudgmental to me. Trusting someone you can’t see with the veryreal important decisions of life seems suspectto me.

Prayer Time: Tell the Lord that if He wants to use you the way Heused Corey, you are willing for Him to do this in yourlife. Apologize for the lack of desperation in the way thatyou seek Him. Ask the Lord to convict you through the power of theHoly Spirit so that you will know what you need torepent of before Him. Spend time sitting quietly before Him with a listeningheart.

  • 36. Heart Barriers to hearing theLord’s Voice: I don’t want to lose control of my life. What if God tells me to do something that Idon’t want to do? Can God really be trusted to lead my life? What if I mishear from God and mess up notonly my life but the lives of my family?

Prayer Time: Share honestly with the Lord where you arewith the challenge to surrender to Hisleadership. If you are fearful of making this kind ofsurrender, ask the Lord to bring to your mindanything that might be causing you to be afraid. Surrender to the Lord, and tell Him that whereHe leads you, you will follow.

  • 62. Prayer time Dear Lord,This is very humbling Lord to realize that Iam so resistant to really getting close toyou. I confess Lord that it is difficult forme to really trust you enough to surrenderto your leadership.
