What is the NPDA?
A tool to help program planning teams design the nutrition component of a program and select the most appropriate community-based nutrition approaches for their specific target area

What is the NPDA?

NPDA Principles
Assists in developing programs/proposals
Guidance based on most recent expert consensus
Focus on prevention
Emphasize community participation and ownership
Complements the Child Survival Technical Reference Materials
Essential Nutrition Actions

To design preventive community-based nutrition program
As a team: participation from a range of partners in a workshop setting
To facilitate dialogue and guide discussion

Helps to determine the overall program focus (prevention or prevention+recuperation) and identify priority intervention areas

How do you use the NPDA? Step 1.
Part I. Quantitative Data:
Nutritional status: Anthropometry
Infant and young child feeding
Maternal nutrition
Micronutrient status of children
Underlying disease burden
Recorded in workbook or Excel spreadsheet

How do you use the NPDA? Step 1
Part II. Qualitative Data:
Food consumption
Services, policies, protocols
Description of community
Cultural beliefs and practices
Livelihood sources and patterns
Vulnerable groups
External context
Discusses information sources

Part III. Synthesizing Data:
Provides information on the public health significance of various indicators
Suggests other questions to think about
Workbook provides a place to record decisions

Based on conclusions in Step 1, team drafts initial program goal and objectives and notes funding availability, community priorities, donor interests and organizational strengths

Teams map the existing capacity of health and nutrition services at the community and facility level
Reference Guide: Guidance
Workbook: Provides a table for recording information on policy environment and services

Provides information on potential preventive approaches to deliver the priority interventions selected in step 1.
Team produces a list of potential approaches based on the analysis of needs and assets in target area

Provides information on potential recuperative approaches to add to a preventive program, as necessary
Team produces a list of all potential approaches, based on the situation in the target area

Final Step: teams reflect on a series of questions to reassess the initial objectives, cost out options, review programming considerations
Team decides on combination of approaches to propose for the target area
